So how is the TI4200 these days?

Update:

I built my budget gamer this week, and it consists of...

an XP1600 @ stock
Biostar M7NCD
2 x 512 Mushkin PC3200
Maxtor 60 Gig HD
Turtle Beach S.C.
XFX TI4200 128 Meg

Well, for one, this computer rocks!!! I play cs at 1280x1024 with no problems, WC3 FT at 1280x1024 with everything on high, NFSMW at 1024x768 with medium image quaility. There are no hickups whatsoever, and so now I am pushing my luck and installing F.E.A.R. Will let you guys know how it goes :).

Btw, this rig was about $100~. Not bad for a computer that exceeds MY needs.

I seriously doubt you can run them...
TI4200 doesn't have hardware DX9 acceleration which means it will run very slowly... about the speed of a fx5200..

Well, if decently overclocked, it should run quite well...as it is DX8, you do not get the DX9 eye candy, but performance-wise still far better than FX5200 I would guess.
Up to one year ago, such a card served me very well in combination with a Tualatin Celeron @1780MHz :D
It played Doom3, FarCry and HL2 quite well...

count on not beeing able to play any of the latest games.

my ti4600 can run Q4 640x480 everything on low but still get framedrops down into 20 range on busy parts. FEAR, forget it, around 19fps with everything on low and 640x480. COD2, it actually played that fairly well. medium/low settings, 60FPS. NFS:MW, played that well too, medium quality, around 30-40 fps. low for the 60's. CSS, marvolous. best engine i've seen in a while, i can play it with everything on high, around 30-40 fps. framedrops towards 20 though. might be my HDD. AOE3, not too mad on low, just bad when you have like 600 people on the screen. UT2004 around 60FPS constant @ medium settings. BF2, forget it, dont have the shader hardware (i was pissed at that too). WoW plays on just about anything. most of these games played in either 1280x1024 or 1024x768, never with AA or AF.

so if you OC that ti4200 you should still get some reasonable performance, but my advice would be upgrade. like the entire PC. or get a 6600GT or something if your waiting for the next gen of vid cards till upgrading.

did that cover most of the recent games? :p

Runs the DX8 codepath pretty well. Its bigger brothers (Ti4400 and Ti4600) can outpace the Radeon 9600 and ~the FX5700.

my kid's backup box is a 2.5ghz athlon m with a 64mb ti4200 oc'd a bunch... he won't play any of the fps's on it anymore... it'll run rpg stuff ok, but it's history for any framerate game...

but the same box with a 6800oc in it does pretty well, so a 6800 gs is probably a reasonable upgrade...

I just got a 7800GT, not to mention I also have a X850XT laying around as well. I'm trying to get some money back from tuition to put it towards a car, and the TI is just laying here doing nothing. Might as well use it xP.

Actually just the opposite. Because its a DX8 card, its not as burdened with the more demanding DX9 coding, so DX8 helps it get a better FPS rate and it should trounce an FX5200.

Yeah, the fx5200 was pretty widely known as not being fast enough to take advantage of its own feature set. I believe they usually recommend you run games in dx8 mode on it, and the gf4 cards should easily beat it.

That is very true, it was very amusing seeing my old Geforce4 Ti4600 beat the Geforce PCX 5900 especially with NEW games! :)

Here are two good examples for you why Geforce4 is better than Geforce FX:-

(Geforce4 Ti4600, Geforce PCX 5900)

EARTH 2160 (LQ) - 54, 33
EARTH 2160 (MQ) - 32, 15
EARTH 2160 (HQ) - 16, 7

GT LEGENDS (LQ) - 49, 19
GT LEGENDS (MQ) - 40, 18
GT LEGENDS (HQ) - 38, 16

I believe I recall seeing that the PCX 5900 didn't even get up to FX 5900LE performance. When they put the AGP to PCI-e bridge in, they also killed a lot of the performance that the GPU did have. I do have a stock Ti 4200 still, and a vanilla (AGP) FX 5900. Never did have a faster GF4, but have OC'd the 4200 in the past.

I don't think the 4200 outruns the 5900 with both at stock speeds.

One of the more interesting things is that my own Ti-4200 (may be a Gainward, not sure) is a hot-running VGA. At idle, it throws off more heat than the 5900 running full tilt. I couldn't use the 4200 in a particular old case I have had here, it just didn't get enough air flow in it. If there is a temps sensor on that card, MBM5 didn't find it, nor did an alternate monitor utility -- I think it was SpeedFan.

Yah, I'm pretty happy :). I just waited for the right deals to come by (and also pushed my luck with the cpu, bought it as-is) and pulled a low end computer together. Haven't tried F.E.A.R yet but if it's playable at 640x480, I'm happy :). Will post my results once I get back to my dorm!

I still have a Ti4200 in my "old" P4 2.8 machine. Plays CSS, HL2, UT2004 and Guild Wars among others marvelously.

Best money I've ever spent on a graphics card - bar none.

^^ same, paid about $175 for mine a couple years ago, and is running my current comp to this day, and will continue to do so for a few months more.

It WAS a great card no doubt.

However an Onboard 6100 motherboard with a turion can outpace the Ti4200 with 128 MB ram enabled. So if you have a gig, you can play BF2, F.E.A.R., or Q4, on low or medium settings. With that Ti4200.... A few of those games are out of reach.

Ti4200 and Ti4600 cards are more or less around the performance of ATI Radeon 9600 cards, minus DX9 support of course.

"Hardware DirectX9 Acceleration" has nothing to do with performance, unless you were trying to emulate DirectX9 or something.

It should be ok. Far Cry runs great on my 9200, and IIRC the Ti4200 is faster as well. Most games will probably run at medium/low settings at 800x600 just fine.
