What is there to do? How's the weather in summer? Any parts of town to avoid? Anything else you can tell me about visiting there?

Summer = 99 degrees F with 99 percent humidity.

Touristy stuff: Uh, the Arch? Weak Beerland?

I'm very glad I moved to sunny Seattle for grad school after living in STL for 7 years :)

I for one have always enjoyed St. Louis. The zoo is worth going to if you like good zoo's and it is free for the most part. It seems as though lots of members of the forum our into taking pictures of plant life so if your into that stop by the Botanical Gardens. If you are going to go out drinking than your friend will probably know where to go but there is a certain part of town that caters more to the younger crowd of drinking age individuals (the name escapes me). I would also recommend touring the Budweiser facilities or at least stopping by the gift shop for some great prices on merchandise.

Ahhhh good, my wife loves zoos........I think I'll go tour the Bud plant, even though it isn't a beer I would normally drink.

Ahh...ST. Louis

Plenty to do there

The drinking area one of the above posters referred to is called "the Landing". It is Inordinate number of bars, nightclubs, dives, and proverbial holes-in-the-walls. I suggest taking the Metro-link (St. Louis' subway system) because parking there can be a b**ch. However, be sure to catch that last metro-link run otherwise you'll be walking.

Union Station (on the metro-link) is also worth a visit. It is a complete restoration of one of the largest train stations (think grand central) in America. It is now filled with shops and restaurants along with a musem of sorts. On the top floor of union station is one of the best Hooter restaurants in America. (Admittedly I haven't been to too many, but the boast is what I have been told).

When you get there, ask some locals about what you can do in East St. Louis (across the Miss. in Il.) You'll get a chuckle

The Hill, if you like Italian Food, is a must destination as well. Keep your eyes open, rumor is the mafia is alive and well in St. Louis as it ever was in Kansas City (the Pendergast Family?)

Plus, there is always Six Flags over Mid America just outside St. Louis. Gotta ride the BatMan and Mr. Freeze rides, They are worth the price of admission alone

I'm in Saint Louis. Today is very mild, but thats cause its 1:30 right now and its really dark outside, and we had a cold front last night.

Anywho, Saint Louis is a good place. I used to hate it, but its been growing on me.

First off, you need to see Forest Park. Wait for a day that is relatively mild and nice out (you don't want to die if you aren't used to the heat like us residents are). Art Hill was recently redone and is absolutely beautiful. The park is huge enough to spend an entire day in, just wandering around.

Also, the Delmar loop. Shopping district, really good resturants, a good venue, and a great independant theater (the Tivoli. You will recognize it because the sign looks like a giant penis, and if you read it from down to up, it says "I lov it")

They have great films, the midnight films are especially fun (Saw Resevoir Dogs last saturday . . . sunday morning).

A couple of other good theaters. Webster University is in Stl, and they have a great drama program, so its worth checking out what they are putting on. You can bike the Katy trail. Its huge, and straight and flat, with good scenery. You can just go forever on that trail. Right through missouri wine country, if you need refreshments.

Also is Babler state park. Just a huge hilly forested area with lots of trails. Beautiful.

And you can do all the tourist stuff, like the zoo and the arch.

The art museum is quite good, if you are into that kinda thing.

The Landing. I'm 18, so I don't really spend very much time there, but they have a GREAT venue called Mississippi Nights. Great music. They also have lots of the better local bands play there. Parking isn't that bad, there is a huge attended lot across from Mississippi Nights. Its a bad neighborhood, so don't go wandering the streets at 3:00 AM. Attended lot is a must.

I almost forgot the Botanical Garden. Its great. Huge, lots of different areas, lots of cool architecture mixed in with the plants, just a huge landscaped park. You gotta pay to get in, though, which is kinda a drag. If its really hot out, wear swimming trunks and a T-shirt, because they have several fountains the encourage people to get wet in. On a hot day, you will welcome it. If you have kids, they have a medium-sized hedge maze that kids love. You can play the minotaur and chase them a bit. My 6 y.o. sister loves that.

Saint Louis is a good place.

Cant say too much since I only drove through there on my way to Virginia but what I did see what a whole lot of ghetto spread throughout the city. There are a lot of nice parts too though, I liked that big arch thing and those casino's on the river.

Okay so I've lived in St.Louis (not including college) since 1990 and here's the scoop:

The summer weather is generally hot and humid. If you're outdoors a lot during the day, drink lots of water.

Typical tourist places: The Arch, Forest Park (Zoo, science center, museums, etc, the whole 100th anniversary of the 1904 World Fair thing going on all summer - and a huge ferris wheel right on Highway 40 "farty" - inside joke for stlouisians) Missouri Botanical Garden, Tower Grove Park, Budweiser tour, Laclede's Landing, Six Flags (a bit of the ways out) and riverboat casinos (that used to actually set sail but don't anymore - a shame really) There are many places to eat and shop. The local newspaper is the Post-Dispatch but their website is stltoday.com...

St Louis portrays itself as a "family friendly" environment and for the most part it is. It's a good place to raise a family. That said, it's a really crappy place to be if you're single, working, and out of college, because everyone over the age or 22 moves out to more "interesting" places, then moves back when they're married, has kids, and wants to "settle down."

Check ticketmaster to see if anyone you like is going to play at The Pageant during your stay.

That place is my favorite to see a band in, it is also down on Delmar.

there are a lot of good bars over in East Saint Louis. They usually don't start kicking till after 11. I'd recommend walking around in East Saint at night rather than driving. THe people are really friendly.

hehe just joking. I think statistically East Saint is worse than Compton? East Saint is a disaster area, probably worse than Baghdad.

Stop by Belleville, which is the first large area outside of East Saint in Illinois. Belleville has was is supposed to be the longest "main street" in the world.

Nice, thanks for all the suggestions...that ought to fill up our 5 day stay. ANother reason we are going out is to check out the local real estate. We are considering cashing in on this real estate explosion in CA and get a house elsewhere (we have considered Oregon also) that is almost paid for leaving us a tiny mortgage payment, and probably a bigger nicer house too.

I am used to heat from when I grew up but the humidity would kick my azz at first. Gotta see if I could get used to it......and tornados, woah, they look kinda scary. I'll take a quake over that.

On a side note, which areas should I consider checking out houses in? I want a relatively safe nice neighborhood, but not "rich."

I just saw Velvet Revolver there last week. frigging awesome. Possibly the best show I've ever seen. The only one that compares was the James Brown show at the Olympics in '96 when Dylan made a surprisse "visit" and played the whole 2 hours with him. The Godfather of Soul and Bob Dylan! Anyway, that's an idea of how great they sounded.

Back to the lecture at hand, you have to go to Blueberry Hill, Imo's on Hampton, Ted Drewe's on Chippewa (but only if it's hotter than h3ll) and see what's at the Muny in Forest Park. Great place to catch an outside performance!
