So how is linux Knoppix?

I saw it at work on a boot disk but I did not get a copy cause my thumb drive was full. I did get to play around with it for a couple mins though...

Seems such a habit to double click... lol I get like 2 programs to pop up...

Your thoughts?

Also what are some good distros for me to get into?

It's a nice way to try out Linux without having to install anything on your disk. Although you can install it if you'd like.

yea, I may make a seperrate partiton for linux, I want to get the best one. And of course for free. I know you got to pay for linspire which is kinda dumb but o well.

I've never used Knoppix but I know Ubuntu has a LiveCD as well. Maybe check it out too? I've been using Ubuntu on my laptop for about 3 weeks now and I'm very happy with it.

My favorite livecd is kanotix which is based on knoppix. By the way, the double-clicking error can be easily changed to windows setting (double-click to open apps/files).

www.distrowatch.org will give you some info an the various linux distros. all tho i generally stick to gentoo or red hat, i see all distros (and Op Sys' in general) as different tools in the same toolbox. figure out what a distro is good for and see if that suits your needs. if youre interested in systems security, whax (formerly whoppix) is a cool livecd with lots of security tools.

for noobs, Suse, Kubuntu, Mepis, Fedora Core (I dont like that last one though other people do)

for more advanced users, Gentoo, Slackware, BackTrack (as soon as it comes out, the makers of Auditor and Whax are working together to make this one)

Linspire is ok. If you use it you need to setup a normal user instead of the root account they give you by default. It's another Debian-based distro.

If you don't know which distro to try try Ubuntu. It's a good place to start. Most people end up choosing something that suites them rather what other people recommend.

However, get Knoppix on CD and DVD and keep a copy with you 🙂. It can be very valuable when things Don't Work?.

omfg. 8 hours To DL knoppix off the offical site? Why? Is there any other sites with higher DL rate? I mean come on, I got 6mb It should not be this bad for 700mb.

I use FC4 and Ubuntu. FC was my first and Ubuntu is my newest install. I like both, but Ubuntu is great for the first timer, plus its free.

I hope I got the right one, It is KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN, took like 6-7 hours to DL @ 5kb a sec. I hope the En Is for english...

As a new user I suggest SUSE.

I love it and it found all my hardware and I was online without doing anything extra. It's a lot easier than a Windows install.

I prefer KDE over Gnome and imo YaST is the greatest software tool ever made. SUSE also has the most apps and documentation of any *nix distro.

I also burnt in the extracted folder into a bootible disc in nero and I guess that did not work.

not sure what you mean

the iso image is a litterally a image of the cdrom. It's like a snapshot of it. To burn a disk from iso image you have to select 'burn as iso' in a special menu in nero. I don't remember much about nero, unfortunately since It's been ages since I've used it.

Very bold statement, and not very true. As far as apps go suse isnt very different from any other distro, and gentoo has much more documentation than suse.
