So how hard would it be to drill through a chalkboard?

Son's teacher wants to mount some other white boards and such over their classroom blackboard. Asking me to do the work (long story). I gotta drill through the chalkboard to put the screws in. Any idea if a standard drill bit will make it through the chalkboard?

Chances are if it is a school, the boards are mounted on a block wall...just get a masonry bit and a hammer drill.

Depends on what kind of chalk boards they are. If they're the older chalk boards - slate - then you're going to want a different bit than if they're simply fiber board. What's behind the board? Blocks? Wallboard? In some scenarios, it might not be enough to hold a significant amount of weight; in the best scenario - cinderblock walls, you should have no problem, but will want to have anchors for wall.

if they are slate, tape up the area youre drilling first so it has less chance of splintering. masonry bits will work on it, but not the hammer drill part. for a standard block wall you wont need it anyway, that is for getting thru concrete for the most part. why arent you taking the old slate/ fiber boards off first to see what kind of wall youre dealing with? the college i went to changed out their boards, replaced them with a spray- on type slate board. pretty effective once they realized you had to smooth the wall first. looked pretty good too.
