McCain might have stood a chance, but when the economy, not McCain's self admitted strong point melted down, McCain lost all credibility by saying the fundamentals of the America economy are strong and then flailing ineffectually thereafter.

And while no one can doubt McCain's love of country, but he sadly has a third rate intellect in MHO, more image than any substance. And the only advisers he was able to obtain were lobbyists, not exactly what amounts to the organizing core of a national campaign, because once again, the forte of those folks is image and not substance. And of course, we cannot ignore the fact that GWB did much to doom any republican in 08.

Perhaps we should be turning this question around and asking what McCain did right?

What about backwards Bs being lightly etched into BILLIONS of Republicans' faces? That's like free advertising right there! Eventually all of those mugged victims were brainwashed into voting for Obama by seeing that damn B every time they looked in a mirror.

McCain ran as a maverick in a party that is best known for winning elections by inspiring the closed-minded and scaring everyone else.

Sorry I took notice of this. Maybe you have forgotten GOP isnt alone in scare tactics?

Howard Dean tells Providence students they will most likely be drafted if Bush is re-elected.
Telling their base GOP wants to dismantle SS (I cant believe this still has life lol)
Telling their base GOP hates anyone but white straight folks (didnt the most liberal state pass legislation?)

Need I go on?

Scare tactics or TRUTH????

Actually, the GOP was looking for ways to reform (ie dismantle) SS, particularly by privatizing all of it. In other words, they wanted to completely tear down the government system and have it be run by private firms. That sounds like dismantling to me

And there was a very real fear that Bush would require more troops in Iraq, and the prospect of invading Iran was right over the horizon.

Sadly, the GOP's scare tactics aren't even founded in reality. That's the big difference. I don't mind when a party uses some *realistic* fear. Claiming that Obama is going to convert the nation into a Muslim theocracy is just ridiculous by comparison.

I think it's pretty simple how Obama won this; even Dan Quayle could figure it out.

Obama got a crap-ton (dare I say, 'bulk') amount of votes!

Obama won because his opponent was a Republican.
In times of a financial downturn: Socialist > Republican. Peggy from Florida doesn't have to worry about paying her mortgage or putting gas in her car. Why? Because she feels if she helps Obama, he is going to help her. And yes, in case you didnt see it, she did say all of that.
