So how do you go to interviews without your boss finding out?

Say you go to work every day in a Polo and khakis.

It'd look kinda suspicious if you walked in in a suit one day and then left for an hour...

At the same time showing up to an interview in the polo/khakis probably isn't the best idea.

Assuming you have no vacation/sick time to leave and go change, what do folks do?

Call in sick....human's can get sick.

What are they gonna say, "no you're not sick, you're fired"

Or you can schedule an interview later in the day and leave early. Change in the car or something.

I have flexible hours, so I just go when I need to or 'work from home' that day.

Also, I don't wear suits to the kinds of interviews I'm going to, so it doesn't look weird if I come in a shirt and dress pants.

No vacation days? How's that work?

I took days off here and there mid-week to go on interviews at my prior job. If all you have is a lunch-hour... change in the car.

I've got a boss that understands. He told me once that everyone has to make the best decisions for their career path. Even he would take the best job to suit his career path. I told him when he hired me that I was thinking I would probably stay for around 2-3 years, and then take a higher paying job (I have a university job that is losely tied to government salary ATM)

I don't interview often (because I like my job), but I will go occasionaly just to make outragious salary demands. You never know.. someday someone might bite on one, and if not, no loss.

There really shouldn't be a need to hide the fact unless you are a slacker and worried they are already looking to replace you.

Most 'bosses' keep their resumes out there and are always interested in hearing a better offer.

Unless your name is on the building, all you owe is doing a good job....if someone is willing to pay you more for the same time you better have a great reason not to take the offer in today's job market.

20-30 years+ ago many could look forward to putting the time in to get guaranteed pensions. This only exists now in government for the most part.

There is no benefit for loyalty anymore and most company's will not go out of their way anymore to ensure their workstaff remains in place or gets hefty parachutes in mergers/takeovers.

I'd just change in the car. Go on your lunch break, etc. I've also took a sick day or vacation day if I could schedule multiple interviews for the same day.

Call in sick, dentist appointments, doctor appointments, vacation time. Anything. Just be sure to give yourself adequate time to go home and change clothes or change in a public restroom if you must.
