So how do you build a community on a web site?

Ok - so you get the website - you start pumping the information - you have a forum - noone ever posts or joins - how do you get it started?

Starting a forum is sort of like the slow clap phenomenon of 80's teen movies. You have to start clapping yourself and then it'll just kind of catch on.

"clapping yourself"

/snicker 😛

Actually, starting a forum is like putting a big sign infront of your house that says "come chat with me inside." Depending on the discussion software o uare using, you are either using a figurative million-dollar-man mansion or a trailer park Winnebago-wannabe.

You need to entice people with stuff such as money, pron, money, women, insightful discussion, money, entertainment, funny jokes, pron...you get the picture😀

Well the site would have been geared for teachers, so all of the above would have been out. . . I took it down after 3 months of no posts. . .

I was going to revamp and try again.

I used phpbb 2.0 for the forum software. . .

I think you need something to draw teachers to the site other than the forum. Can you collect links to useful sites, news stories, etc.? Generate traffic to the site and the forums will develop.

it's hard to get an active forum going unless you are lucky or you find a niche.
it's a lot of work.

What do you have on your forum that would attract and retain users?

What value do you provide for your members?

You need some content that users find valuable, and you also need to find a way to make it visible to your target audience.
