So...How do I peel out improperly?

I got a new(er) car, it's an 04 Acura RSX-s. It's a manual. Sometimes when I'm at a light, it spins the tires and wheel hops. I'm not even trying to really go fast off the light either. My old car was bigger and had less power, but I could go off the light much faster without worrying about it. I've driven a number of other manuals for years, so I've got the basics down, but I can't seem to do even a quick start without the tires spinning. Am I missing something? If I wanted to really launch the car, what should I be doing?

FWD = wheel spin city

When you launch in a FWD car, weight shifts to the rear and your drive wheels lose traction. Sucks huh?

But seriously, you need to either slip the clutch more (bad for clutch life) or use less throttle. If you don't do it very often, slipping the clutch until you get out of the hole will avoid wheel spin and get the engine into its power band faster.

You have to control the wheelspin with the throttle, or just short shift, but then your car will fall on its face.

Maybe you just need some new tires?

That's what I'm thinking. I've got a Ford Contour SVT and I don't spin the wheels unless I'm trying to. It's got a 2.5liter v6 with 200hp and it's front wheel drive. When the road gets wet I'll sometimes spin the tires accidentally, but when it's dry I really don't have that problem. I do have to let the clutch out slower though. That has more to do with the rev's falling off though. The Contour SVT has a problem with throttle hang. Some stupid emissions thing Ford did to the car so that the revs don't drop off immediately. I think it's a vaccuum on the throttle body that makes the plate close slower. It's kind of annoying when you trying to take off fast and you can't shift till the revs fall off.

If you are an enthusiast and don't care about tire life and things like that, get some Nitto 555 drag radials. That should eliminate 75% of the wheel hop.

The other 25% is in suspension bushings, tie rods, sway bar, shock tower brace, things like that. Wheel hop is cause by flexing and deflection in suspension components that distort the wheel geometry which results in repeated gain and loss of traction in rapid succession. Even more of a problem on FWD cars as they wheels have to be allowed to move to steer, so there is always some degree of movement that will remain that can be more easily remedied on RWD cars.

Or just don't take off so hard. Give up the dig to the other guy so as to get rolling gently, then reel him in after you get rolling.

How many miles are on those tires? How's the tread?

I've driven a new RSX-S a few times and never had any trouble getting traction.

You just need practice. When you get it just right you'll be slipping the clutch for about 1 second and the car will jump forward without wheelspin (well there will be just a little bit as you want to literally be on the edge of traction). During this time you're moving from half throttle to full when you feel the traction can take it, depending on the car even full throttle will spin the wheels depending on how fast you're going. It happens very quickly and you'll be out of 1st gear real quick.

If your wheels spin that means only two things, not taking into account crappy tires...
too much throttle
or clutch out too fast

Just keep practicing.

The tires have 30k miles on them. They're on their way out, but I want to use them the another month or two till it makes sense to put winter tires on. I guess I'll have to deal with crappy traction till I get the new ones mounted. I didn't think I'm messing up the launch, but the other manuals that i've spent decent amount of time in were an underpowerd s-10 pickup that couldn't break traction on dry pavement and a z06, both very different from this car.
