So how bad are General tires these days?

My old pickup, an ‘03 Silverado, is going to need new tires soon-ish.

It’s had a set of Michelin Defender LTX (255/70-16) on it…put on in 2016 and have a bit over 68k miles on them. But they’re down to 3/32 or so and are no longer inspiring confidence in rain

I looked at new Michelins, but what cost me ~$160/tire in ‘16 are now $230/tire…before sales tax. For a 20 yr old truck, $1000 for a set of tires just seems insane (although I just put new set of Bilstein shocks on her last month.)

Looking around and found some General Grabber HTS60’s for ~$130/tire…Amazon sale.

Did buy a set…all US made and one pair week 40, one pair week 41 (all 2023 year). Haven’t mounted them yet, but really cannot find anything equivalent for better price, especially not US manufactured. Loads of Chinese, etc built junk floating around for cheap.

Got two weeks for free return.

Prob keep unless a convincing argument can be made against them.

And I’m kinda 70 yo, fixed income and no longer drive the highway like used to.

Thx 🤪

They are a CR recommended buy and it looks like you got them at a great price to. I don't have any first hand experience with General tires though. I'm a Michelin and Pirelli man myself.

Before anyone spouts off on how CR is garbage. It's just another tool to be used when researching products it's not the end all be all.

I thought General was one of the "good enough brands" made in the USA. Altimax line seems to not draw ire.

I have one used Altimax I got recently from a junkyard. Seems just fine.

Just put Grabbers on my CRV a couple months ago. I chose them for 11/16 tread depth, and the fact that the prior General Alti Max seemed to wear too quickly. I notice that the Grabbers ride a little harder, but noise seems about the same. I gave up a little snow performance for longevity.

I'll comment and say that tire prices have sure been jacked up. General in the 133s. Michelins...well, I haven't looked but they must be approaching 200 bucks for a single tire.

I think the only reason not to buy another set of Michelins is if you're convinced you won't outlast them, since 68K miles is a hell of a success story. But it sounds like the Generals are a done deal, so hopefully we can expect updates on their performance.
