A lot of their numbers are gathered by themselves by calling retail stores and distributors, but their sample size is much too small to be really accurate. However, I'm pretty sure they update their numbers whenever NPD and other groups release their numbers, so they're probably not too far off.

Of all the console sales charts it's by far the most reliable. In my experience anyway.

For monthly numbers, NPD is the company that everyone relies on. At the end of this week you should see news items at all the game sites talking about their results.

No one trusts the weekly or monthly numbers from VGChartz, they can be off by as much as 50% plus or minus.

The overall / long term totals for VGChartz are a little more reliable because they "fix" their numbers after the real NPD numbers come out.

But yes, the wii really is catching up very fast, by selling a million a month worldwide.

I can't seem to find the article, but VGChartz has shown their numbers are less than 10% from actual sales. So yes, still not accurate, but much better than the counter used on nexgenwars.com

The only thing I hate about vgchartz is that they continually list Wii Sports and Wii Play in their software sales lists. I know some of you will disagree with me, but a pack-in game and a $10 mini-game package that comes with a $40 controller should not be included. I think it gives inflated numbers to the Wii in an otherwise somewhat respectable listing.

Wii Sports I agree with. WiiPlay is packaged separately as a game with a remote so it's sort of valid.

I agree that they shouldn't count Wii Sports "sales" outside of Japan, but Wii Play should be counted even though it is essentially a $10 game. There have been other games in that price range (new) - the $4 Burger King games, the $5 Blockbuster exclusive Outlaw Golf games, iirc Starsky & Hutch cost $20 and NFL 2k5 cost $20. Sales count regardless of price.

Heh, first-hand reports suggest that people in Japan will buy the console for big games and then sell it to a used shop afterwards.

Very accurate; they are usually off by <10%, and they religiously track actual data from retailers and firms once they are released.

So do they end up buying a 360 more than once?

I would guess that they are buying a used system or else the 360 would have more sales over there. Seems pretty silly to me.
