I just picked it up, with a few other titles from Gogamer, for 8 bucks.

Install it, patch 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.041, 1.05, and 1.06. Go to run the game and Bam! I get a little window from everybody's best friend SecuRom telling me to insert the original disk.

If I'd paid 50 dollars for HOMMV at release, I'd really be pissed. I didn't see a crack for 1.06 at GCW, only 1.05. But, I'll look more later.

This happened to me with KOTOR 1 on vista, I followed the support instructions at securom and they sent me a link to a replacement exe that worked fine.

So you can try that approach if you don't want to roll the dice with a possibly trojan-infested or just hame-crashing crack.

Ironically, of the three games I bought from Gogamer, only Rise of Nations Gold worked out of the box. Imperium Romanum required a fixed exe to in order to function, means I cannot install the 1.02 update though, at least, until a reliable crack is available. Or I decide to uninstall Daemon Tools, which isn't going to happen because thats how I play BG and Torment.

Edit - Email with SecuRom's Launch Analysis file sent to SecuRom's support. Lets see what comes from this.

I remember reading about one of the patches removing SecuRom from HOMMV? Guess I was mistaken.

I know this doesn't solve your problem, but have you thought about getting Tribes of the East? IMO, it's much more than an expansion pack - it adds a separate upgrade path for EVERY CREATURE in all the towns, effectively adding 50% more creatures (plus an entirely new town, which I personally adore). Before TotE, HOMM5 was just... meh. Better than HoMM3 only because of graphics, but gameplay left something to be desired... after TotE, I feel that HoMM5 has finally evolved into the game that it should've been to keep the HoMM franchise alive.

I attempted that too, no go.

I considered getting both the expansions, but they were 20 each, didn't have the money to spare at the time. And if I can't get HOMMV to run, why would I want to purchase an expansion for it and give Ubisoft more money?

I've been a HOMM addict for a long time, and I wouldn't recommend HOMM V or the expansions. You could try the Kings Bounty: the legend demo, to see if you like it. Personally I didn't because I like TBS. But it has gotten good reviews.

Just got an email back from SecuRom support. They sent a different exe file, with which the game loads. I haven't done any play testing yet. Interesting thing is, with the new exe, the game version is reported as 1.0 in the game.

Last month I reinstalled HOMM V just to revisit and enjoy it for a while. I downloaded all the patches up to 1.5. No problems playing it. My copy is from when it first came out however so none of that Securom and DRM bs you see nowadays.

I am pretty sure that Securom was always in the game. It was originally going to ship with Starforce, but after a lawsuit, Ubisoft decided to drop Starforce, and move to Securom for security.
