Well, I'm curious. Is there anyway to get through a router?? I'm using a Dlink 804. Not sure if the firewall is enough though.

maybe he really is an elite hacker.. ;)

better watch out. He might be on AOL too-- then you'd really be in trouble.

Why would I be in trouble if he's on AOL. Enlighten me please. :)

becuase everybody knows that all the best hackers use AOL. the powerful networking capabilities of AOL's tpa-packet switching protocol's provides the prime enviroment for hacking into and out of any systems. And the AOL network even masks' the users IP to make them almost invinceable, and near impossible to protect against.

AOL hackers are feared- this is the main reason Anandtech forbids AOL users from posting. Its a risk that isnt worht taking.

LOL, first of all, he's half a globe from me. I'm not on AOL. :)

Secondly, all my ports are closed except those which are NEED to be opened. Are they dangerous??

Gotcha. well, he's like in Malaysia and I pretty much know what they can do cause I was once a hax0r wannabe(The good old days for BO and netbus) back home. :p

So, is a router firewall enough to protect me??

okay-- i might not have this completely right.. but i'm gonna try. The router isn't technically a 'firewall' i dont think.. well sorta it is. If the the "hacker" gets your IP adress- he is actually getting the IP of your router- so when he tries to hack you, he's only going to get your router. And chances are, there isnt a whole lot he can do with that. And i know with my d-link 807 router-- it has security features built in that turn the router off when it detects any hacker type activity. So you should be fine. Keep all the ports you dont need closed anyways.. you should do this all the time though.

There was once where my router was getting pinged like nuts and I closed all the ports later. Things were better then. Do you think i should install zone alarm?? What can they do if they find an open port on my pc?? I mean, they have to insert a trojan in me first before I can be hacked?? Correct me if I'm wrong. :D

my d-link fudged up on me once (i think it was my fault though) it just needed to have the memory reset and it worked fine. I talked with the d-link support people for 2 hours and they couldtn figure out what was wrong with it. So after they gave up and i was about to RMA it, i saw the little reset button on the back of the router and gave it a try (you have to press it in and keep it pressed, unplug the router, let it sit for 10 seconds unplugged with the reset button pressed, plug it back in, let go of reset..) and bam- it worked fine after that.

i'm pretty sure they cant do anything. unless your running a server or something from your computer- then they're really limited in what they can do. And as long as you have some anti-virus stuff install you should be safe. Zone alarm is free.. it never hurts to try it. i have it had it on my computer for about 4 months now.. and it has never detected anything, and i'm pretty sure thats becuase my router takes all the hits- and nobody has made it past my router to my computer. or something like that :)

LOL, I just don't want anybody to access my files on my pc. Some of my work are in there. :D

I've got Norton Antivirus on. I guess I'll try zoneAlarm though.

i'm almost positive that you'll be safe without it.. it never hurts though...

and this elite haxor is full of it. There is nothing he can do to your pc or your data without having a way in, and you havent given him one. Dont believe anything he says. "i left my virus disk at home" translates into "i'm a lying sack of @#$% who doest know jack about computers and gets off to farm animals and i suck"

:)

Be sure you change the password on your router. It usually defaults to "admin". I would guess that most haxors would know that and might be able to get into your router like that. I'm not a networking guru, so I could be wrong.
