So have you seen Tom Cruises new Last Samurai trailer?

Yeah, saw it on the front of Matrix Reloaded when we went to see it over the weekend. Looks pretty good, although what is up with Tom Cruise being in it? He's definitely not Japanese....

Nope, although I suppose they could do a little makeup job on him like they did with Sean Connery in "You Only Live Twice". 😀

i don't know what to think of this movie. for some reason it reminds me of the second ninja turtles movie... (or was it the third???)

Sez Coming Attractions:

"Set for release on December 5, the film has Cruise playing a late 19th century Civil War hero hired by the Emperor of Japan to educate the country's troops in modern warfare techniques. This leads into a conflict between old and new as the Japanese samurai warriors -- who have been the country's protectors for hundreds of years -- rally against this new wave of militarism sweeping their land. It may sound heavy but John Logan's script has tons of promising visuals and solid action sequences."

The story is that he's a Civil War vet teaching the army how to use rifles and the struggle he has as an outsider.

EDIT: yllus got the offical confirmation before I did. 😉

Isn't this a remake of an original Japanese film?

And who else would play this role? Are there any Asian actors in holywood? Jet Li? lol.

yeah, the third...me too
im all for samurais killing one another in movies, but i dunno...tom cruise?

I love the matrix as much as the next guy, but I won't try to pretend that I respect the opinion of the average Matrix-viewer, so saying that the theater laughed at the trailer isn't saying that much. I myself am fairly interested in this movie, as it promises to have some good large-scale action scenes...Cruise did pretty well in Minority Report, I don't hate the guy.

Plus, I wasn't around in the time of Kurosawa, and think that the history of Japan has a lot of appealing aspects.

and like someone else said: guns and swords. And let me add, one hot Japanese woman.

Yeah, they should have cleared that up on the trailers. Everyone just laughed at the trailer... haha.

The trailer was weak, if that was supposed to entice me into seeing the Last white samurai it failed. Besides the bass was to damn loud in it. Having thundering bass does not make a trailer awesome. Sigh.

Worse casting than Cruise as Lestat.
