i heard that hackers were just plain programmers and they don't do any malicious stuff or illegal stuff if u prefer. The person also stated that "Crackers" were the bad guys, now wth am i supposed to think?

if programmers were hackers, then why do we have 2 words for one definition?
 
Hackers are people who smoke cigarettes. I don't know wtf a cracker is unless you meant crackhead. We got plenty of them, too.
 
Hackers aren't *supposed* do any malicious things, they're supposed to find exploits in efforts to better understand and/or improve a system. The crackers are hackers who have gone to the dark side.
 
The term hacker got perverted by the media. I prefer "hacker" and "malicious hacker." Malicious hackers are great.

Whoa. Two words with one definition?!?!? It's unheard of! They should give it a name... like synonyms.

I thought the hacker/cracker thing was generally well-known. But it doesn't matter now. Hacker now means cracker, unless you're a geek and willing to explain the hacker = programmer thing to everyone.
 
hackers are programmers....

programmers can be good...and programmers can be bad

to make the distinction between the two...we call the good programmers hacker and evil programmers crackers.

how can you catergorize something you don't understand.

crackers are merely successful hackers who speicalize in software. frown on them if you like, but when you forget your passwords, get phished and someone changes all of your logins, get infected with a kernel imbedded mal/spy/viri, want to actually be able to listen to the music you purchased online, want to be able to rip your CD, make a backup copy of your kids favorite DVD movie, or use any open source application you'll be looking for the work of a cracker ine one way or another.
