The web is abuzz with speculation that the new Clint Eastwood project, Gran Torino, is in fact the final installment of the Dirty Harry series.

What is the film world coming to? Have Hollywood's elder statesmen gone senile? Bruce Willis, Sly Stallone and Harrison Ford have all resurrected ageing franchises in the past 18 months (two in Stallone's case), presumably against the advice of their doctors. Eastwood, who at 77 is a good decade older than even Ford, has already announced his wish to retire from acting. Perhaps he wanted to give his most famous character (most famous named character, at least), Harry Callahan, one final outing.

The inconclusive web debate is distilled here, but certain reputable UK media organisations have already taken the bait. The official story - and, sadly, probably the true one - is that Gran Torino is the gentle tale of an old buffer befriending a young Chinese immigrant over their shared love of a classic car. But it's worth hoping that this is a mere Blue Harvest-style cover story, designed to throw fans of Harry and his .44 Magnum ("the most powerful handgun in the world", in case you didn't know) off the scent. So are we to be privileged with a last look at the latter years of Harry Callahan? I, for one, am feeling lucky.
