at least, according to the former head of the worldbank

if you want to help out, and cheaply, switch your bulbs to compact fluorescent. you can barely tell the difference between them and incandescent nowadays. only problem is they don't work with rheostats. due to the lowered electric bill and long life you'll come out ahead in terms of $$, and the rest of us come out ahead with lowered greenhouse emissions due to less pollution. you could make your money back in just a couple of months, depending on electric rates and usage. if everyone in the US switched to CF bulbs it'd be the equivalent of taking 3.5 million cars off the road.

keep your old bulbs for when you move and take your CF bulbs with you. recycle your CF bulbs (usually where you purchased them) as they contain trace amounts of mercury

I use CFLs in every light in my house. I figure it might help offset the computer running 24/7, at least a little bit.

Count me out. I'll just wear shorts and some extra sunblock.

Thanks, I work for Hawiian tropic, we had a great season!. people were
flocking to the beaches this year. Hell I went to a wedding in Maine and
it was 97 degrees! Global warming is going to mean a LOT more overtime
for me!

AC units are basically the culprit.
While I think they are great inventions, too many shmucks use them when it is 75 degrees out. Purchasing higher quality building materials like your window panes is a much smarter way to cool a house.

Look, we passed the point of no return sometime back in the mid 20th century. We're not going to stop global warming by cutting emissions. We need to ENGINEER a solution -- be it from the things we've already started (like carbon sequestration) to the realm of borderline sci-fi (like orbital shades, which we could do, but it would be ridiculously expensive with current tech)

I thought the experts say that the big hole in the ozone layer was healing itself and getting smaller over the course of the previous decade?

@ jlbenedict: there is no relationship between ozone and global warming, they are 2 completely different problems.

Also, switching away from incandescent lights isn't something to do just to combat global warming, its just common sense. They are just plain cheaper, there really is no excuse not to switch.

Buidlings in general are wasteful. The massive requirements for temperature control, both hot and cold, water usage, impacts on local weather (massive buildings shift wind patters and cause ambient temperatures to rise due to their absorbtion of heat during the day and then radiating it back out during the night) and large electricity requirements - not to mention the building materials themselves. Thats why 'green' architecture is such a big push in the profession right now

I used thoes bulbs in my trailer and more then half failed in less then a year and one ever cought on fire buring thorgh the ceramic bottom. I also did not see any differance in my electric bill and neither will about 90% of other americans because the electric company doesnt send anyone to really read your meter, but once a year, which at that point of of been guessing low at your bill. Then you end up getting this massive electric bill and call to find out I am right. If not them the been guesing for quite some time and pray they dont send someone to come look at your meter. At this point too may be bad for them to come look and find out they been over charging you where they will end up owing you, so I would say for most they will just keep guesing and you just keep paying.

Only ones that may see a reflection are the ones required to go out and write down the meter reading themselves when returing the bill with payment. But then my experance with the bulbs themselves show you wont be saving anything if they do fail and all that extra money is out the window to keep replacing them. And I hate to think if I wasnt home when the one cought fire what would of happened. There was a loud pop, the light went out, with all kinds of smke coming out of the fixture. It didnt stop smoking till I hit the switch for the light.

I used to use incadescent bulbs in my house where there were flood lights but then I found some flood lights at home depot that are actually florescent (they have the swirl light inside of a glass enclosure) and they work excellent. One thing I really like about these bulbs is that the old incandescent always burned out but with the florescent I've yet to replace them despite how long I usually leave my lights on. There is one side effect of this though, they're not 'instant on' in the sense that you have to let them warm up inorder to get full lighting effect.

I agree. It's cold up here in the mountains of NY.

Can't we just push the Earth slightly farther from the sun?

Distance from the sun doesn't matter so much. In the northern hemisphere, winter falls when the earth is closest to the sun, and summer when it is furthest. This is the opposite for the southern hemisphere of course. I'm just pointing out it doesn't matter.
