and I am excited!

My Cousin's Dachshund had a litter of puppies back in August. He says he feels bad for me being alone and figured I needed some companionship so he is bringing her up this weekend.

I think I am gonna go with Anka (Ah-n-kah) for the name. Unless someone can give me a good, German Girl's name.

I also had a question about shots and how often I should be getting them. My Cousin has already got her first set of shots and she is about 8 weeks old. How soon should I expect to have to get the next set?

What about pet insurance is it even worth it? If so, can anyone suggest where to look?

I spent $130 on her yesterday via Amazon (Kennel, Bedding, Puppy Potty Training Mats, a Baby Room Divider, and a little stair case for her to get up on my bed).

My Landlord has been super awesome in helping me get a fence setup in our backyard for her to run around in and even gave me the go ahead to cut a doggy dor into the wall if I so chose.

Feeling really good about this. Sounds kinda weird I guess, but I figure this is what most parents must feel like with a kid on the way lol.

*EDIT* Oh and I was gonna start her on Blue Buffalo Wilderness Grain Free Puppy Food. Is this a good choice?

Find a good local vet, preferably by word of mouth and make an appointment for the day that you are scheduled to get the puppy or soon thereafter. Get the record of shots given from your cousin and bring it with you. The vet will tell you what is required in terms of upcoming shots and when they should be given. The vet will also have opinions on good choices for puppy food. We just used Purina Puppy Chow I think.

This brand of food is pretty rich, if you have a PETCO by you i suggest you hit them up, because you can try different bags of food to see how your dog does, and if they don't work out you can always return them.

I love doxies!

Be warned, they are a handful. Tons of energy and very needy but they are so worth it. They are cuddle monsters! They will burrow under your covers and cuddle up with you. Awesome for watching TV.

Don't go wild on puppy food. My animals have always had Purina since its cheap and good. This is its own thread, so I won't get too into it.

Get her a crate! Doxies love their own space. Put a nice fluffy blanket in there for her to burrow under. Get her lots of chew toys. Doxies are hunters, so you need to let her "hunt" things.

Doxies pee. They are famous for going into a back room or somewhere out of site to pee inside. Be ready for that and the training that it takes to break her of it. If you see her going towards the back room (or any room away from you for that matter) keep an eye on her. She may be scouting for a tinkle spot.

Doxies are one of my favorite animals. They are hunters, cuddlers, players, barkers and sleepers. Give her lots of attention and you will have a best friend for many years to come.

EDIT:
Get the dog insurance if its reasonable. Its well worth it.

If there's one breed of dog I will never own it's a dachshund. I abhor that breed and know so many people with mean ones.

Growing up, we had nothing but Dachshunds so I am totally cool with it. I forgot to get her a blanket, but I will most likely do this when I pick up her dog food at Petsmart. Unfortunately, no PETCO where I live.

I got her this crate and this bed.

Will get a doggy door installed at some point but I didn't feel like it was need at this point until she gets a tad bit bigger.

which stairs did you get?

My last roomy had a doxie and my sister has a mini. They are awesome dogs as long as you are ready for them and it sounds like you have that covered.

I'm jealous and I insist on pics as soon as possible.

I figured I'd start with a small bag, like 4 LBS and go to like an 11 LB bag of adult food.

in terms of shots and vet... i would consider using Banfield which are located in petsmart's. They have plans you can get that are ~300 bucks a year that include all the shots you'll need, plus 2 routine checkup's a year ... a LOT more cost effective then the normal vet route

food wise... I've always been a fan of Orijen dog food ... my dog has been on some form of it for the last 6 years ... it's hard to find local though, luckily I have a place near me that sells it as cheap as anywhere online

Having a dachshund(see avatar), I just keep buying 4lb bags. You go thru it a little faster but the food is fresher since you're rotating it more often.

My recommendation for kibble - http://www.wag.com/dog/p/artemis-fresh-mix-small-breed-puppy-145841

Switch to the adult small breed kibble when she's 10-12 months.

In regards to the doggie door, can you install one in your back door? If you ever move, it'll be easier to replace the door with a new one then patching the wall.

edit - forgot to mention, get a small ziplock bag of the dog food your cousin is feeding her now and transition the new food with the current food over a couple of days. Sudden changes in diet can lead to problems that you don't want to have to clean up.

The Banfield option looks excellent! Too bad the closet one is 100 miles away :(

I will look into Orijen, thanks for the tip.

I KNEW I remembered seeing a Doxie in someone's avatar! We had a black and tan named Mickey when I was in middle school. He passed a couple years ago unfortunately. :(
Would love to see more pics of yours.

Will look into that dog food and thanks for the tip on the 4 lb bags.

I have a sliding glass door on the back of the guest house, but I was trying to stay away form them because I know how terribly inefficient they are. The Landlord was ok with leaving the doggy door in the well when I decided to move out, but there is really only one spot we can put it, which I don't think is a good spot. Do you have any recommendations on the sliding door doggy doors?

I use a panel for a sliding glass door. This is what I use and during New England winters, it does a great job of keeping the cold out. It's not cheap though - [urhttp://www.dogdoors.com/products/82/Standard_Thermo_Panel_IIIe_Patio_Panels.phpl][/url]

When I'm not home, I stick a dowel that's 1" in diameter between the open/unlocked slider and the door frame to keep outsiders from being able to pull open the slider.

Note, b/c I also have a 110lb Ridgeback, I had to buy their biggest sized panel which gives me a smaller opening than you'll have when trying to go thru the sliders.

Holy Guacamole you weren't kidding! lol Is it really THAT much better than say the ones at Home Depot for like $150? I don't have a problem paying for quality, but I'm more apprehensive about it since I don't have some way of physically comparing the two.

Cute pics of the Odd Couple! They reminded me of Teddy (A Golden Retriever/German Shepard Mix) and Mickey. I will see if I can find a photo of them for reference. Mojo looks exactly like Mickey coloring wise, but Mojo is much bigger lol. How old is he?
