Small web dev shop. Lots of responsibility, fast paced ... learning curve.

We hire a guy about 6 months ago. He needs a visa sponsor. No problem ... he's a good guy, does good work ... fun to have around. Great fit.

He gets rides to and from work because he doesn't have a car.

He gave us some story on Wednesday about the people he gets rides from. We kept asking quesitons because it was interesting to hear how crazy it sounded.

Yesterday he comes clean and we find out he's had a car the whole time ... but get some long story about how he didn't have a license at first, isn't comfortable driving, sometimes drives alone, sometimes has someone drive him in his car ... blah blah blah

I'm livid. We're pretty personal here, less than 10 of us. Being lied to is something I take pretty seriously. Especially when special leniency is given because we thought he didn't have a car. But he did.

WWYD?

Cliffs:
1) Guy works here doesn't have car
2) rarely takes rides from coworkers
3) gets special leniency when late, not expected to come in at night when required by others 'cause of no transportation
4) says some ridiculous stuff about people he gets rides from
5) next day says he was lying
6) has had car the whole time he's worked here ...

Your post  me. How was he getting to and from work? Were people from work carpooling him?

He's asking to be fired. If he constructs a fantasy like that for something so stupid, who knows what he might do.

You seem to be stuck on the fact that he actually has a car rather than the fact that he lied. I mean, did you go out of your way to give him a ride ? What about others ? Seems he wouldn't be telling those stories to you if you guys had been involved so I'm assuming you guys weren't.

I don't really see the big deal though... just don't trust his word if it's not about work. Like you say - he's a good worker.

By sponsoring a visa, I vouch for you. You lie to me? Trust is broken?

Worst case scenario ... something horrible happens and I feel responsible that I didn't see through it.

Best case? I've been lied to for someone to save face.

sounds like he said things to get out of showing up late and not coming in at nights. for all you know, he might be driving his car and just parking it somewhere else. do you actually see him arrive with others? irregardless, he lied more than once to the company and the supervisor. he should get written up or something for sure.

It's the fact that he receives special leniency. To work you must be at work.

When he's late a lot of the time ... we just write it off as that he couldn't get a ride.

Sometimes we are required to work at night. He has amnesty because we didn't think he could get a ride out here.

We didn't make these excuses up for him. It was explained to us that he didn't have transportation.

We offer him rides. We would have taught him to drive.

Honesty is the best policy.

If you're going to lie, don't get caught.

That's the bottom line.

Why should've he told you right away that he was uncomfortable driving? He didn't know you guys, you might have questioned his manhood.

Sounds like he's finally starting to trust you guys. Yes, you can be upset, but I wouldn't make a bit deal out of it.

Well in that case I would be pissed too... I think he's about one step away from being fired if I had any say in it.

IF HE HAS INTENTIONALLY used the "no car" as an excuse (instead of you guys just assuming) - then I would fire him.

p.s. u wrote: He needs a visa sponsor. No problem ...
that IMHO has nothing to do with this issue as u urself noted - so why bring it up ... ? that tells me something about you ...

AS an immigrant myself, i can easily relate to the fear/ hesitation of driving and the ridicule that comes from ppl for whom driving is a second anture - so its understandable ... again, if he used the "no car" excuse so taht he doesnt ahve to work odd hours or be tardy ... fire him - that is inexcusable ... hth

It's not even so much anger with him as ... feeling taken advantage of by being lied to.

I usually offer a certain amount of trust until more is earned over time, or broken.

Once broken, it is difficult to regain.

Help him out with his driving lessons by making him the dedicated after hours on call person for the next six months or so. ;)

I would have called him this morning and make him come give me a ride ... but he didn't show up until 9:45
