So did Apple really buy "better" OLED screens from Samsung?

Looks like DisplayMate has rated the X as having the best overall screen on a phone. This is what they say in their review:

"
... the iPhone X becomes the Best Performing Smartphone Display that we have ever tested, earning DisplayMate’s highest ever A+ grade.
"

So, I guess Apple really did buy better OLED screens from Samsung than what Samsung uses in their own phones?

Apple does a good job of calibrating their displays. So when you add in an excellent Samsung panel with Apple's excellent calibration, it's not surprising you'd end up with an excellent display.

That is the reason why Samsung is charging Apple so much for each screen on the iPhone X and driving up the X's cost. Apple gives Samsung spec requirements for the new screen, Samsung designs and makes it and Apple calibrates it.
