I'm going to buy either MS Streets & Trips 2006 with GPS dongle for my laptop, or a stand-alone GPS unit like the Garmin StreetPilot i2. Would the portable one be something I could bring along with me out hiking in the woods to use in the event that I get lost? Or is it useless off of roads?

On or off-road really isn't an issue Sukhoi, as long as you can power the GPS device be it your lappy w/ a dongle or the "stand-alone" unit, as long as the GPS receiver can triangulate its position w/ out any obstructions, you'll be fine :)

As long as you have power it doesn't matter.

LOL! Not exactly. ;) I guess I just wanted to make sure that the outdoor-specific GPS units didn't have special stuff in them, which would make using a portable car-based unit while hiking be pointless.

S&T is only $100 while the portable ones are like $250 is if could still only use the portable one in the car it would be pointless to pay extra for it.
