40 below??? That's fvcking cold, yo!

OTTAWA (Reuters) - A cold spell gripping Ottawa is so intense that houses have started to produce loud cracking noises, prompting worried citizens to report burglaries and gunfire, local police said Wednesday.
Spokeswoman Monique Ackland said police had received around 20 calls Monday night and Tuesday morning, when temperatures in the Canadian capital dipped to an unseasonably low minus 40 Celsius (minus 40 Fahrenheit).

"Those were calls about breaking and entering, people making excessive noise and calls about gunshots," she said. Police responded to each alarm and rapidly realized crime was not responsible.

"Those calls were all (prompted by) the cold," she said, adding that one possible reason for the loud noises were exploding nails.

No, IIRC they are the same. It is the temp where the two coincide...

Well, I'm confused now. It's 16F here now, which is -9C....it's the same @ -40? How's that work?

Edit:

Thanks So...weird. When you go down to -50F, the C reading is "higher"....confusing to say the least...

conversion formula of c->f is f = 9c/5 + 32

solve for f = c, you get f = c = -40

NP. It's one of those slightly strange things that comes in with the two different 'rates of change' that the temp scales use.

Not to worry...it's nothing I can't handle....

It was -41 with the windshield factor a few days ago.

A few rules of the thumb...

1) Start car about 10 mins before you have to go.
2) Drive slowly
3) Avoid any potential accidents

if done right, you got nothing to worry about!

Bundle up! Any exposed skin will get very cold within seconds, frostbight within minutes.

When I was 10ish -40c was common in the Winter(Fort McMurray, Alberta) and it wasn't so cold that us kids wouldn't play outside. Now a days I wouldn't even want to go outside in that, but it's doable.
