So, can we get a ground rule here?

I really dislike people drawing family into political discussions. Unless they are actively participating in policy, then Barbara Bush, Cheney's wife, Edward's and Kerry's should not be part of the bloodletting. Not only is it irrelevant, it's the right thing to do.

I wonder how long this will last...

There are a ton of irrelevant things that get brought up. No big deal as far as I'm concerned (on this message board) if someone wants to bring up a wife/spouse. Technically they can/will affect their spouses, if only in some degree so I say at least a bit of arguably important discourse.

That being said, I really don't care about the spouses.

I wouldn't mind hearing about Cheney's lesbian daughter either but since she [for some absurd reason] is backing and participating in the promotion of Bush's discriminatory policies attacks on her are fair game to me. Otherwise, I agree.

People are free to do what they want. Personally, I think that discussing the potential first lady would be ok, if it were discussing. It won't be though. It will be the usual trash. With candidates, whatever is said is fine with me since they are running for office. I admit I am old fashioned and have a strong sense of family. People have enough ammunition on each side to deride those running for office. Attacking spouses is generally just to get a dig in.

Well, by proxy - she is working on the re-election campaign.

Ah, I see. I couldn't figure out why a lesbian would come out and support a discriminatory amendment.

Supporting Republicans IS = Supporting Discrimination :D

Especially since Barbara is Dubya's mother, not wife. She was Bush 41's wife, Laura is Bush 43's wife. And I like Barbara, even if her son is a bit of a dork ;)

I don't care for it at all. I can't stop people from doing as they please, but I do not have to participate, and I would hope the more thoughtful members of both sides would feel the same.

Fine with me. I don't have much to say either way about the daughers/wives/moms of the candidates or the incumbents anyway. Should be a non-issue.

I'm pleased to join in, Winston and respect that simple boundary.

Methinks 'tis a fine thing to aspire to and then actually enforce some small shred of decorum on this otherwise indecorous board.

But proclaiming this without enforcing it would be futile. We need to band together and make it stick.

If the family memebers are actively commenting on the issues, then there is merit in discussing their stands. Example: Lynn Cheney recently stated that gay marraige was a states rights issue.

Beyond such examples, there is little or no reason to include the candidates family members in our sometimes not-so-friendly banter.

They shouldn't plop their asses on TV spouting politics then. Once they "willingly" become part of the campaign, what they say is fair game.

Sorry, but politics is politics and once you put your politics out there with your face - you aren't "safe" from what politics brings.

It's called money...she's getting paid $100,000 a year to run something.
