So Bush and Rice have made a mess of Pakistan?

Ah, the U.S. and its obsession with putting themselves at the centre of everything.

Hot tip: General Musharraf first seized power in 1999, while President Bush was still Governor Bush. And he's not needed America's help to cement his grip on power since, though I'm sure he appreciated it.

Other than trying to deal with Pakistan because they are of strategic importance in the region, I don't see specifically where Bush and Rice screwed things up in this article. Are they responsible for Musharraf not sharing power with Bhutto? Are they responsible for Musharraf jailing a judge? Are they responsible for Musharraf suspending the Constitution?

No. The only mistake that Bush and Rice made here was trying to deal with a military dictator because they were of strategic importance to deal with the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

Alternative options for dealing with Musharraf:

1) Kill him/invade and install new leader. Good luck with that.

2) Refuse to deal. Amusingly hypocritical since President Bush is also criticized for not engaging in dialogue with North Korea. Also lose valuable staging ground into Afghanistan prior to invasion.

3) Realpolitik. Acknowledge that you sometimes have to deal with unsavoury figures to keep the world spinning and try to urge him to do the right thing, knowing that harsh words are pretty much the worst you can do otherwise.

I was watching a segment on CNN and they state that Bush and Co. will NEVER be able to deliver a public speech about freedom, human rights, or any of that crap again because of the double standards that we have for our dictator ally, versus our dictator - former ally turned rogue or anyone that's not benefiting us.

Scumbags.
