So besides Autotrader and the local paper...

Online would be nice, that would make it easy. Basically I'm looking for a cheap (~$1000) car to get me through the summer, that should be manual, get decent mileage, and have some unique feature (say, not very common, forced induction, diesel...).

Anyway, autotrader sucks because you have to search by make. I've gone through a few choices, but I'm not looking for a specific make and model here. The paper doesn't have what I need, either.

Any idea where I should go? Suggestions?

thanks for the suggestions, guys...so far I haven't found quite what I'm looking for, but keep them coming.

Under $1,000 that runs comes usually through non-traditional means like your personal grapevine (late Uncle Leroy's Buick or your best friend's aged Camaro after his third DUI).

Elsewise, the best cheap cars are found through serendipity, which you can enhance by just aimlessly tooling around through the back streets (I realize this may be a Catch 22 for you if you don't already have access to a car) and looking for cars just sitting in the side yard.

I also hope you have a friend who can check out any potential purchase. Oftentimes the initial purchase price is the cheapest part of keeping a low priced car on the road. Decent ones are out there, though. Look in the coupon pages of your local phone book. Some dealerships run ads for state inspection for as low as $4.95. Take advantage, even if the car is inspected, in which cast the subsequent procedure is called a "safety" inspection.
