So basically PS3 doesnt support backwards compatibility at all anymore?

You get what you pay for 😉 Funny how 360 has no BC and nobody cares but PS3 decides to remove PS2 BC and people make posts about how terrible that is. Wonder where that stuff is coming from? heheh

360 has emulation through XBL. The reason its not quite as big an issue is because the original Xbox has a much smaller game library and user base than the PSX and PS2. The majority of highly popular games on the Xbox are now emulated, so the majority of the userbase is satisfied. Alas, it'd be next to impossible to emulate the hundreds of upper tier games that have been produced for the PSX/2, let alone the cult games popular by geekdom on teh intarweb

You shouldn't try to use something as meaningless as "facts" to stop people from pulling wildly incorrect statements out of their posteriors. It lets ATCF know who to ignore in the future. 😛

I hate G4. They're the last place I'd go for info.

Like mentioned, they're pulling it out of the 40GB model. There is a possibility, however, that they'd be able to do emulation of PS1/PS2 games on it (completely software based) sometime in the future. Look at the PSP. It can emulate nearly all PS1 games (you just need a custom firmware to "unlock" that ability).

As of right now the 80 GB is still in production and has both PS2 and PS1 BC. Also, despite the fact that many news outlets keep ignorantly saying the 40 GB model has no BC, the 40 GB still has the same PS1 BC as the 80 GB model (which is near 100%).

You sure about that?

The 60GB had the Emotion chip from the PS2 and had around 98% BC. The 80GB did it through software for around 80% BC. From Sony themselves, per this thread, I thought they took it completely out of the 40GB.

ps1 != ps2

I think it's b/c the PS3 has no games, making BC at this point almost essential esp considering the extensive library of really good PS2 games out there.

You're right, I guess I didn't really just play Halo 2 on my 360 last week.

The best part is Sony is trying to eliminate BC because their PS3 games cannot compete with their PS2 lineup. So instead of making better games, they just want to make it more difficult for people to play the old games.

where did you get this? Sony is drastically trying to get good games out, but you can only make so many games at once. First thing first is to increase sales of the system so that more third party developers put more effort into PS3 game development.

Now why they took out BC? I won't pretend to know. Hopefully they bring full software BC back in a firmware update.

From what I recall, they removed support for ACTUAL PSX games...but you can still download them from the Playstation Network (for a nominal fee of course).

I don't know why they would remove the PS2 compatibility from the 40GB model, unless its to get you to buy the 80GB. In the 80GB, they removed the EE chip, its all done through software....so literally it would cost them no money to do PS2 emulation on the 40GB model. Who knows, maybe they'll add it later via a firmware update.

Hmmm... I was under the impression that actual discs would still work. I read through the press release for the 40 GB unit and it specified that PS2 discs would not work, I don't recall it saying PS1 discs wouldn't work. It wouldn't make much sense to only allow PSN downloaded PS1 games when both the downloads and the discs could use the same emulator.

I don't know, I could be wrong, that's just the impression that I got. I have a 20gb (with upgraded HD) so I've got no complaints.
