They're okay, a step above your kwikset home center junk.

Baldwin, Lori, Sargent, Medeco are better manufacturers. They also can get really expensive. Even the best are susceptible to non forced type entry. I shouldn't talk about it much but if you search for "bumping.pdf" on google you will see a nice example and tips.

You can just have the locks re-keyed. Heck of a lot less expensive. And while you're at it have all of your locks keyed alike.

You should see my key chain: car key, house key. :)

Just like mine, with the addition of a keyfob for the car.

I had a locksmith come out to re-key my locks and he charged $9 per lock along with a ~$50 house call fee.

If you take the lock to Lowes they charge $5 YMMV. You have to have the key though.

Something like medco would be the safest option right? They have angled pins/grooves on the key and need a special blank/machine to cut them. The only way to get medco keys cut is through the medco company itself. Most big institutions such as universitys use medco locks - but they're prolly a bit too expensive and overkill for a home.

LOL, man Medeco locks/keys are for the professional environment, ie Hospital. It's gonna cost you. My Medeco key has "Restricted Do Not Duplicate" stamped on it. You can have a master key that opens all the locks, and slave keys that only open a certain doors like the front door and the conference room door. Our in house lock shop can make the the keys, and it costs our dept a pretty penny when we place an order for them.

Unscrew door set from the inside (two screws), take the outer doorknob with the tumbler up to the locksmith. He'll re-key them for about $6 per lock if you have a key already.

I re-keyed four Schlage locks and deadbolts alike when I moved in.

IIRC, my Medco keys came with a card with a magnetic strip on them - it has the code to cut the keys to fit. Cost upwards of 100 bucks a key to get them replaced.

I didn't realize that kwikset was crap...those were installed in the doors when we moved in...

we do have a monitored alarm, but is it worth the $$ to get schlage locks?? would need one for the front door, door to garage and side door...

if a thief wants to get inside, he pretty much will anyway...
