imo, it's pretty much the same thing...

it just doesn't have all the negative connotations with it...

but it also depends on your definition of "ricing"

to some people, simple wheels and lowered springs (the proper lowered springs) are considered rice...
why? wheels and springs can be both cosmetic and performance oriented if done properly...

to a case mod...
if you define "mod" as overclocking cpu,ram, etc...
that's the same as turbocharging a car....might be bad in the LONG~LONG run, but it does wonders for performance...

as for the other definitions of ricer wings and body kits, lights, fake emblems and stickers...
and case mods of also fake stickers (i've seen a couple), lights, windows and such...
they're all generally cosmetic modifications unless done poorly, and can actually lower performance....
(i.e. using just regular bulbs on cases...upping temp and sucking the little power it does, or 80 pound wing on the back of a FWD car)

and even if those cosmetic mods are done properly...looks are a subjective thing so you won't please everybody...

too much rambling...but my answer is the concept of it is the same...
you want it to "go faster" and "look cooler"

When I modified my case I did water cooling and a bunch of custom fan work, that wouldn't really be considered ricing. It cranked my P3 700 well over a gig.

Windows, CCFLs, lights ... they could all be considered a form of "PC Rice" - but as MacBaine stated previously, PC Rice and car rice are two very different demons.

PC "Ricer": "Hmm, if I trace my PCB with UV pen and stick a blacklight & window on my case, that would look friggin COOL at dark LAN parties. Yes. Look cool. Not look like a better rig, but become one through pleasing aesthetics."

Car Ricer: "Dude, I'm going to stick a bigass wing on the back of my Hyundai FWD car so it'll look faster. Yeah. Not become better, but look like it. Then I'm going to plaster a hundred Type-R and Kanji symbols on my car, make the tailpipe wide enough to symbolize what I had to do to pay for these body kits, and lower it so close to the ground that I have to stop driving it when there's more than a 0.65" deviation in road balance."

See the difference yet?

O/c'ing any rig, reguardless of wether it's a Via/Cyrix/Amd/intel does not make you a "ricer," IMHO. Some people don't have the budget to purchase the latest computer parts, myself included. 🙁

Just 'cause you want to get more performace out of your current rig doesn't mean you are a ricer.

Performance mods such as extra fans / overclocking...no. But I don't consider adding a turbocharger to your car to be rice.

Mods that do nothing other than make the case look cool such as adding a window / lights / paint...yes that is equivalent to rice.

some of you guys are such hypocrites.

you call 'rice' on al the car modders (some of which actually make their car faster and some of which is pure crap) while you defend your own case modding, which is exactly the same thing (some of whic actually make the computer faster and some of which is pure crap).

you list your mods in your sig, go to a car forum, their mods are in their sigs. some are performance (like yours) and some are show (neons and 'biohazard' grilles in computer cases).

you think your neons and LED fans and acrylic cases or cut out sides look good? people who are not a fans of computers thinks it's utter crap and you people are idiots.

so your hobby is computers and someone else's is cars. you're still a ricer. and you're a geek to boot.

yet people would call a civic with an intake, exhaust, and headers 'rice' (Even though it's not)...(although it's true a lot of that stuff is still crap, i hate lawnmower exhausts.). to pseudoquote you, just 'cause you want to get more performance out of your current car(eg civic) doesn't mean you are a ricer.

now if someone puts a stupid wing on their car i can't defend them, they're an idiot. 😕
