So, anybody seen a QX6800 in the wild yet?

Hmmm, it's either a phantom launch or Tom's Hardware was right and there never will be a retail boxed QX6800 sold to the public because the processor must be cooled with water.

I think the massive 135 W TDP that results from reaching 2.93 GHz with the QX6800 reflects the limit for Kentsfield. AMD's got a small window of opportunity to get its quad core Barcelona solution on the market before Intel moves to the next generation.

Updated The window is already closing for AMD. Enter Yorkfield.

It's been made available for preorder on Overclockers UK today, supposedly they will be arriving in stock on Monday.

Daily Tech reports today that Intel is going to bring out a QX6850 with a 1333MHz front-side-bus and a 3.0 GHz clock.

What do you suppose they'll use to cool that? Maybe liquid nitrogen

watercooling

And i think someone already showed us an article saying it would be limited to vendors who can provide adaquit cooling for it.

And people thought i was kidding when i said these monsters required h2o to cool

That would have been me.😉

My point is that since watercooling is hardly a mainstream thermal solution even at the extreme end of the enthusiast market, isn't it a little silly for Intel to continue announcing faster quad cores when they know damn well they can't be cooled on air and when they have no intention of selling them directly to the public?
