If you don't like rap, you're not social?

It's hard to defend mainstream rap because there's nothing good to say about the rap culture or image they're trying to sell.

But I mean what image is rock trying to sell?

The whiney, hate filled douche?

At least rap is good dancing music and has a beat, thats what I'm saying.

Rap helps people meet eachother, thats why its so popular, wtf is rock doing. Moving people apart.

I'm not defending Rock either. Just so happens that Rap is the most popular genre out there right now so that's why it's under attack.

The Rock-n-Roll of today is different from that of the 70s & 80s. Rock can be just as fun and used in dancing music like rap is today. At the height of its popularity, though, Rock has been blamed for immoral behaviors, ie sex, drugs, and Satanic worship.

The difference between Rock and Rap that I noticed. Rock doesn't specifically target the poor like Rap does. Rap tries to represent the downtrodden of society that rises above the system by any means necessary. (Incidently a lot of these guys idolize Tony Montana from Scarface). In so doing they flaunt their "blings", "hos", and their pimped ride. 50 cents album title is representive of their attitude, "Get Rich or Die Trying."

O come on, what do you listen to thats MODERN.

Please don't bring up Iron Maiden or something.

What does that have to do with anything? I'm not saying that modern rock is good, or anything.

It has everything to do with everything, have you listened to Linkin Park, The Killers or Nickelback? Its not just emo. All of that sh!t is just annoying and whiney.

I'd rather hear lyrics of whining and self-loathing than cop killing and pimpin' ho's.

You can't cry about people bashing rap and then bring up the trusty "OMG Linkin Park is teh suXor" routine. It's no mystery that around here and on many other forums, that mainstream rap is considered talentless trash. But the same can be said about all genres of music. It just happens that more people don't like rap than those who do. And there seems to be a ton of generic rap threads, just like there are a lot of anime threads. And those anime threads get crapped on as much as the rap ones.

Most people will just judge rap similar to how you judged rock, by listening to 30 seconds of it on your local radio station. Why do you care though, if you really like rap and if it's superior, then why would you care what someone else's opinion is? I'm more of a rock/metal fan, but that's just my thing. You won't find me bashing rap as a whole, but I can't say the mainstream rappers impress me much.

I think it has to do with these three things:

1. The demographics in ATOT.
2. The prevelance of "If I don't like it, it obviously sucks and no one else should like it either"
3. The lack of openmindedness for a lot of the people here....

On another note, there are quite a few people around who are very knowledgable about it and are willing to share their thoughts on rap.

Probably because 95% of rap sucks. It's all the same, they all rap about the same stuff and have been for years. That's why people hate it. It's not the genre specifically, or the style of music, it's just EVERYBODY that uses the genre to promote hate.

None of my rap music promotes anything but love. I'll enjoy what I got and ignore the rest.

But have you listened to rock stations? Its ridiculous how un-melodic rock has become. Just screamin and yelling and railing on guitars.

One thing with rap, is that its really catchy.
So's the clap

wrong

95% of commercial rap music sucks but there's lots of good material out there that just does'nt make into the MTV and local radio rotation.

I think 2Pac was one of the reasons commercial hiphop declined, his insistence on pushing the thug image into hiphop definitely influenced a lot of rappers after him.

people take it too seriously. Its entertainment. I like hip hop very much but my tastes in music don't end there. I like alot of rock songs and alot of techno-ish songs, jam bands, classical. It doesn't matter to me its just entertainmetn. A good beat and a good flow is just as entertaining to me as listening to nas go into something deep. I'm not going to move to the ghetto and start gang bangin and sellin c0ke cuz I like there music. That notion is just retarded.

Not for nothing but there hasn't been anything ground breaking coming out of country or rock in forever either.

Rap is only one thing - Entertainment.

I think the fact that lil' Jon and paul wall are on TV is a positive message actually. Its proof positive that you if you work hard enough you can make something out of nothing. As annoying as you think those two may be they earned there spot in the lime light through hard work it wasn't a freebee handed to them. Especially Paul Wall....its twice as hard for a white rapper to make it.
