9/11 was sudden and unifying in "us VS them".
Nov'16 was a year and half of (un)civil division.

It's important to look towards the future in a positive manner, but we gotta live with each other now after everyone was told the world would literally end if the impossible happened. And that's essentially going to be Trump's first job as president: uniting all Americans as one. The country is still utterly divided right now and if he's as good of a leader as he says he is, then he should know the right words and right actions to bring the country together again. Even after his detractors start accepting him as president, that doesn't mean that they will support him all the way.

If I remember that old adage correctly: respect has to be earned, not automatically given towards you.
