So a fish in my aquarium...vanished

I've had a fresh water aquarium for about 6 months.

I have 4 Black Phantom Tetras, 2 Dwarf Gouramis, and 2 Clown Loaches.

This morning one of my loaches was gone. This previously happened to an upside down catfish I had. Completely vanished, no carcass, no bones, no body, no anything. I'm totally and utterly at a loss.

I don't have any other fish, and unless my wife has really gonna off the deep end I don't think she is responsible. So what the hell is going on!?

Check the filter, might have gotten sucked into that.

I forget what kind of fish it was, but it looked harmless and it was pretty small, but I had one that would eat others... didn't even have teeth!

Nope. No other pets besides the fish.

Checked the filter, but there is no way it could have gotten sucked up into it anyway (its got a small grill coating covering the outside, not possible)

The only thing I can think of is that it died and the other fish totally devoured it, but I swear it was there yesterday.

I see 3 possibilities:
1. It died and was eaten by your other fish
2. It died and is hidden under a rock
3. It died and got sucked into the filter

Order is the order of likelyhood.

No rocks in the tank, I removed the driftwood and looked around, no fish to be found. Stirred around gravel a bit to see if I could find some bones or something but nothing I really noticed. I'm guessing the other fish ate it too...sucks, its a great looking fish. The two of the loaches seemed to get along pretty good.

I don't think its possible it could have gotten into the filter, its an emperor 400 and its extremely narrow.

I'm beginning to suspect my gouramis aren't as innocent as they seem.

Check around the floor man. Under couches and all. Too many times have fished jumped out on me. You find them lying there the next morning. Some how the manage to get passed the cover...

how far could it really get?

That is you answer, those things are vicious, my wife a few in the tank, and they'll occasionally eat one of the slower fish.

Keep in mind that some breeds of fish are jumpers. I've had to go diving after the little bastards when they jump out of the tank before. It always happened when I was feeding them. We had a 55 gallon tank, a wide model that wasn't very deep. This made the opening hatch at the top the full width of the tank. I'd open the top, sprinkle food from left to right, and if I wasn't careful, one would make it out of the tank before I could finish feeding and close the lid.

I did end up losing a frog that way (had one of those awesome little water frogs in with the fish). He just disappeared one day and I found him flat on the like-colored carpet a week later all dried out

We were over at a friend's house one day. She has extremely poor eyesight, and was asking us about a missing fish in the tank.
We are are gathered there at the glass looking, and this big fish comes over and spits out a fin! At first it is OMG and then we about peed our pants we were laughing so hard:laugh:

ive never known a clown loach to jump. however if there is something wrong with the water any fish could jump, in an attempt to find some "good" water. check the ground around the tank, itll be dried up so itll shrink as well. its also possible that the other clown loach ate the body, but i doubt it would happen in 1 day. also im assuming you have hiding places for your loaches? maybe its hiding there, I used to have fish "disappear" for weeks only to see them just fine later. or maybe its dead in its hiding spot.

from wiki

Male Gouramis are fin nippers and will bother other fish in the tank. When two male gouramis are put in a tank together they will fight constantly. Female Gouramis don't bother other fish and usualy sit alone in the corner. With male gouramis they will leave certain species alone like danios, mollies, silver dollars, goldfish, and plecotimous catfish. They don't like fish with big fins like guppies and beta fish. They are also compatable with Tetras and [Rasbora]along with other small, fast fish.

This has got me thinking about the Futurama episode where Wormstrom invents prosthetic legs for fish so they can move about on land.

Checked his hiding place, which is where I assume he was, but he wasn't there. My wife had a nice gourami that I added to the tank today, I've been watching him though and I think he has to go, seems aggressive.
