The important thing was not discovering America, but staying once you found it.

If the Chinese did find America before Columbus, then the larger number of Chinese explorers should have spread the illness that the Europeans did.

The Viking landed in America, but the people already there handed the Viking their tailends. It wasn't disease kill the natives that the European stayed.

well, zheng-he did sail to much of the pacific rim and this has been well documented. Sucks to be the guy who sold the map for $500, nows it's probably worth 1000 times that value.

I just can't imagine sailing such a great distance in those early days of exploration. It must take a lot of balls to do that!

I'm disappointed in you guys. I left an opening for a witty comment and no one took it!

Didn't Vikings make it here way before that AND there were remnants of there civilization? if 30,000 people occupied a place on this side of the ocean, i think we would have found it.

Yeah, I always thought that the Vikings arrived in (what is now) Canada some time around 1000AD.
yes, in Newfoundland and Labrador.

This is very well documented and here is a link:

I don't know how anyone can "discover" an already occupied land. It seems sort of retarded to give any one credit for that, lol.

Agreed.

It should be a question of who invaded first.

I wasn't going that far back. I was thinking more like this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/430944.stm

and most likely a few other settled peoples who were likely killed off by the "Native Amaricans".
