So a "bum" asked me for money today...

I take the DC Metro to work every day from Rockville, MD into Crystal City, VA. I have to make a stop to switch trains down in DC at Gallery Place Chinatown.

So I'm waiting for my 2nd train to come and am watching something on my iPod Touch.

I woman walks past me with a man walking past her, pushing a stroller. Neither of them look like bums by any means and are clean, dressed okay, and the stroller is a nice stroller.

i see the man stop in front of me and say something, so I take my headset off, and he then says...

"Excuse me, can you spare any money? I need to buy some diapers for my baby?"

I said no and he carried on and just sat down with his wife waiting for a train as well. They did not go ask anybody else after me but I'm not sure if he asked anyone before me.

It is just odd as hell because of the circumstances, and during rush hour it costs at least like $3 for the shortest train ride per person, it isn't like he just got down there for free to ask for money.

They have said they needed money for gas, diapers, baby formula, etc.
I never give it to them, but I have given money to bums.

I cannot recall ever being asked for money from any other race.

I had a white dude walk up to me in the Wendy's drive-thru and give me his spiel about being a vet and needing money to take a bus home. Funny thing was he had been standing there before I even drove up, so I am guessing he got run off from the gas station next door that is always busy.

my favorite bum i saw was in San Fran. he was outside a liquor store with a sign that said 'need money for booze' so my friend and i started talking to him. we tossed him a few bucks after talking to him and he was just being honest

my least favorite bum was also in San Fran. my friend and i were standing outside our hotel and he came up to us with his bags and asked my friend for a cigarette and started talking to us after we gave it to him. then he told us a joke and asked us for $$ for him telling us a joke and we told him no, and then he went into a rant about how we have all this money since we're staying at a hilton hotel and all this other crap. then we went on and told him how since we work hard and our job decided to send us to san fran for a conference, that is why we are there. we told him to fuck off and went back into our nice hotel while the loser slept outside.
