I've been on a business trip since May 27, 2008... I get back to the office and find out that one of my coworkers was arrested for DUI memorial day weekend!

I couldn't freakin believe it. He's several years older than me and always talked shit about people driving drunk. He wasn't just a little drunk either, he was over 2 times the legal limit of .08 here in Alaska.

Apparently he just served his 72 hours in jail this weekend. He'll end up paying several thousand in fines and must purchase a $1100 breathalizer that he must have installed in his car and blow into every 15 minutes once he gets this license back (automatically lose it for 90 days here).

I'm completely dumb founded. :(

SR22 here he comes!

Do the crime, do the time was the first thing I said to the coworker who told me about it.

Sucks big time.

Amen. and I hope it gets even stiffer for a 2nd/3rd offense too.

From what I understand, SR22 is required in Alaska.

around here the first DUI is just expesnive. usually 2k fine and about 800 in Attorney fee, probation, 90 day suspension of licese.

on the 2nd its worse. 3rd (i think you should NEVER get a license again) its like 10 years to get it back.

Wait, Alaska has DUI laws? Who are they afraid he's going to kill, a moose? Nobody lives there! :p

.16 is crazy high, but the test isn't accurate either all the time. I got nailed for a .168 when I had 4 beers over a 4 hour period and then arrested about 4 hours after my last drink.

My road side looked fine, I was clear and coherent...but just the failure of the breath test was enough.

My failure was due to having a large open cut along the front of my mouth (knocked my teeth through my lip that morning).

It's more about revenue than saving lives.

too high for driving, yes. crazy high, not really. Drunk, but not dangerously drunk (again, from a health perspective, not a driving perspective)

Anyway, wow, pretty stiff laws up there. That's like 2nd offense penalties in PA.

Did he earn the reading or was he one of the few like my deal? Also I was stopped pulling into my parking space by a cop my ex knew (I still lived there and was moving out what would have been the next day).

All I know is most of those in my classes either blew the minimum or weren't even driving. like 3 or 4 were arrested for having just been sleeping in their back seat. One guy was arrested in NYC and had his paid in full new corvette impounded while he was washing it in his own driveway while having few cocktails.

I used to believe in MADD and SADD, I have a good friend that was maimed by a drunk driver...however; both of us agree the actions behind this lobby is one for revenue and political sway. If you have an issue to get pushed through congress, getting MADD/SADD behind is a sure win. Since we vote today on several issues for each vote, it's easy for them to append it to a non-related action.

Most people have a false sense of the proportion of actual DUI caused accidents to all accidents that happen. They also think more people are actually legal on the road than really are between evenings thursday through Sunday. They say most drivers will fail at .08% driving between the hours of 10pm - 2am within 5 blocks of popular downtown spots on those given nights. You would think they'd have their DUI checkpoints right there, but it would create a mess for them. So instead they pick popular roads usually leading into areas of more wealthy residents. In the poorer sections they usually go after the drug angle as while it's not as profitable, it's more newsworthy and great resume material.

It cost me 3 months of trying to find rides and about $6k. I paid out my community service rather than serve it.

Drunk driving laws are draconian. Whatever happened to punishing people after the crime, instead of before it?
