Yamaha all the way.

Though I would say I would prefer an Arctic Cat, since I run an 08 M1000 right now ;) Been looking at a Yamaha Apex for when I upgrade though.

Yamaha. I'm posting from our corporate network, and they would probably fire me if I said otherwise.

The Yamaha has electric start and reverse, too..nice perks. I'm hoping the suspension is adequate - I think they improved it a bit from the 94-95 vmax sleds.

Arctic Cat > *

They have a bit of a reputation for blowing motors..and as I'm looking in the $1500 range, I don't want to buy one right before it breaks. :p

I like Polaris in general more, but I have a 2002 Edge X 800 so I'm biased.

Between the two sleds...I'd take the 700 Yamaha over a 500 Polaris. How many miles does the Polaris have? The Yamaha has 8500 which is A LOT of miles. If they drive it like it's stolen like me...mileage should be taken into consideration.

after looking, the polaris is the better looking sled for sure. but from the sound of it he put mods on there which probably means it was driven hard. if it does not have many miles on it then is probably fine. at the same time 8500 is alot on the yamaha.

I bought the 2000 XC 500 SP during that model year and still own it to this day. I've put over 4000 miles on it and it still runs like a dream. '00 was the first year Polaris had the power valves on the 500 and let me tell you, that little basketball sized motor rips! There wasn't a 500 out there that year or the next few that could touch me in a straight up drag and I gave a lot of 600s fits with it, too.

Although triples, especially Yamahas are smooth and predictable, I still prefer the weight advantage and responsiveness of the twin 500. The suspension was pretty decent in it's day but has definitely been outstripped by all the chassis advances in the last 10 years. I'd probably do myself a huge favor if I had the shocks rebuilt all the way around...

The Polaris has just under 6000 and a new top end (I don't really want a rebuilt motor). 8500 is a lot of miles, yes - but the 700 triples are ridiculous motors..guys on Totallyamaha are saying they're good for 20k plus easy.

Yeah, if it's comparable like that I'd say go with the Yamaha even though I'm a Polaris guy. The power of the 700 over the 500 is definitely nice, but depending on how you're going to ride it you may never use it(such as narrow, twisty trails). If you get a ton of snow and want to put a track with bigger paddles on it the extra power will help.

Rebuilt motors aren't bad if you know who did the work and can trust them. If you don't know that, though, it's luck of the draw unfortunately.
