me and my gf would like to spend a weekend in big bear or mountain high sometime in the winter to go snowboarding. we've never been to either(in fact we've never seen snow at all) and would like to rent out a small place for the weekend. can someone provide me with a breakdown of where i should go, where to stay, what type of things to do?

thanks

bear mountain

/thread

there really is no substitute. It's bear mountain or mammoth/tahoe

i can recommend allseasonsbigbear.com for cabins. note that with the fires recently, I bet most of the cabins are gone. there is hardly any snow. ever. when there IS snow it's great.

save up and take trips to tahoe or mammoth. Bear Mt. is complete crap and whatever you do don't goto mt high. I lived in Sacramento for five years and had season passes to a lot of places in tahoe. Moved back to so cal went to bear mt./snow summit and instantly realized I would rather go half as much and drive back to tahoe then ever go there again. They oversell the place like crazy, the runs are small and the park is JAMMED with people. Not to mention the huge lack of real snow.

Man, that's insane to me. I feel like people down here in SoCal aren't nearly as exposed to the rest of the world as Northern California and this furthers that.

I really liked Mt.Bachelor.

Yeah, because Bend OR and LA are right next to each other! :D

Its close to me :)

It was close to me when I lived in Sunriver. I just thought it was funny you said Mt Bachelor when he asked about LA.

I grew up on Norcal and went to school in Socal and have yet to see any snow at all either..

PSA: If the snow is yellow, black, brown, pink or otherwise dirty, do not eat it. That is all.

Big Bear is trash compared to Tahoe, but yeah that's where I would hit up if I were in SoCal. If you are willing to drive more, go to Mammoth.

Go to Mammoth or better yet take the drive to f Lake Tahoe & go to Heavenly or Alpine Meadows.

Edit: Actually since you've never been skiing/boarding before you should go with Northstar-at-Tahoe ... its much easier to get around & geared to beginners.

Mammoth is great. it isn't Vail/BeaverCreek, Park City, or Tahoe, but it's just under them, which is pretty high up anyway. I've never been to Big Bear though.

Where'd you live? I lived in Sacramento for over 18 years and not only did it snow two or three times in Sactown I'd also been to numerous places not far away where it snowed. Amador County, Pollock Pines, etc. Actually, it snowed when I was a counselor at Sly Park last March and that's why I had to get my dreads out, cuz they got all fux0red from it.

Mammoth is tons better than anything down near LA.

What's with you CA people not seeing snow? I lived there for 25 years and I saw snow - of course only twice in my life did it actually snow where I lived, and the other times we drove up to the mountains for sledding and crap....how can you not do that at some point?
