Even though I'm still young and energetic, I think investing in a snowblower would be beneficial... I mean... the snow will never stop coming and this thing will last as long as ... say... a lawnmower... so why not right ? As far as area... a single driveway and a sidewalk that runs about 50 feet. Shoveling took me a good hour or so last winter. I don't care how young you are - it's back-breaking.

I would say it depends on where you live. Do you get that much snow every year?

I think an hour of shovelling is not all that much actually. I don't even bother trying to tackle my entire driveway, it's too long, I usually just park my cars at the end of the driveway when I know it's going to snow. Took me three hours or so each storm to shovel it out last year.

it snows that much on Long Island? I know up here in Syracuse, a snow blower is a necessity. Sure it may only take an hour to shovel the driveway but then there are a lot of days where you'd have to do that 3-4 times a day. Not fun.

They are nice though so if you have the money to blow on one, go for it.

I also figure since my dad lives 15 minutes down the road, I can drive it over and help him with his driveway/sidewalks.

It snows... what... maybe 5-10 times/winter on LI ?

Heck no!!! If you really need to clear the snow, either

A. Pay a neighborhood kid 20 bucks to shovel it..

B. Get a 4-wheeler and stick a plow on it. You can enjoy the 4 wheeler all year round if you've got some place to ride it. (sorry, but my stereotype of Long Island is: no land available for such activities... is that accurate?)

I have a truck parked in the driveway, but I have no desire to mount a plow on it. Besides, that's a bit much for just a driveway and sidewalks.

Kids do come by, but for $20 every time, I'd rather pay myself to do it.

And when you live in an area that snows a lot after one winter you'll end up paying as much as the price of a snowblower. We bought one last year, ran about $700, nice Craftsman one. Almost paid for itself last year here. We pretty much had to clear the driveway at least twice a day for a month last winter.

I bought my Ariens 24", 6HP Tecumseh, electric start, 2 stage in 1985 for $150.00. It had been used commercially, and in a cemetary for quite a few years before I bought it. Over the years I've had to replace the friction drive wheel and shear pins on the auger, but that's about it. She's still willing and able to keep our drive clear, but I only break it out a few times per year lately. Just hasn't been that much snow these last couple winters.

Nice thing about Ariens and Snapper products, is that they keep parts available forever. If you really do want to keep one a LONG time, that's important. I'm not too crazy about the single stage snowblowers. If there so little snow, that one of those can get the job done, I'll just use my snowpusher shovel instead.

No. Move to a house where your neighbors both have snowblowers and enjoy cleaning your property, like both of my wonderful neighbors enjoy doing. :D They both love their snowblowers.

YES we have had one for 15 years. if you live somplace that gets alot of snow. Like we did when we lived in Maine they are a must. no idea how much ours cost but its got an 8HP motor 4x3 foot opening and it 5 gears and reverse and it tosses snow like 50 feet. when your driveway is a 1/4 mile long they really help out

if you dont get teh snow volume then dont worry about it

Cheers to Ariens.

I'd get one, but would probably go for a used one like an Ariens or Toro. They were very solid in the 60's and 70's, and parts are still available.

Also, you'd be saving your back. And saving time.

It depends where you live. Living in western NY I would say yes you need one if you have a driveway or any large area to shovel. Living on the east coast below Maine, I would say no. They only get one or two large snowfalls a year.

I will be getting a snow blower hopefully this year if the finances allow it.

I have a long drive way and the NE snow is wet and heavy. So for me, it's definitely worth it.
