So if I bought snow tires (without rims) from one of the larger dealers like Les Schwab or Discount Tires and paid for them to have my regular tires swapped out and rebalanced/mounted, come spring time do I have to pay them again to do the swapping?

yes, you probably have to pay everytime to mount/balance tires. that's why buying a cheap set of steel rims is not a bad idea for winter.

Yeah I assumed as much. Been trying to search through Craigslist for someone who is moving away from my area and won't need snow tires/rims. Thanks

Go on Craigslist and find a set of matching steels with winter tires already on them. I've seen ads for steels with 75% tread winter tires at $100 for all four. Would be cheaper than buying new tires since you don't use them very much anyway.

If my current tires are a 5x100 do you think that any set of steelies that have 5 holes will "fit"? Usually all I see are 5 or 4 holes for regular cars.

When I bought my studded snow tires, I ended up buying a whole new set of rims as well. An added benefit with purchasing another set of rims is you can swap them out yourself instead of waiting in line at the tire shop. Here in Anchorage, it's about $40-60 dollars each time you get the tire shop to swap out tires.

Before that I used to drive all year round with stud-less snow tires like Blizzaks. When you have snow on the ground 6-7 months out of the year, it wasn't worth the hassle to change over, plus I never drive more than 6K miles a year. I would have probably gotten a few years before needing to replace them.

Switched to snow tires yesterday, and it's snowing today 🙂

So when are you switching back to rain tires 😛 Or be a woos and wait until May/June

Home is in CO mountains, so I know your pain

Official date when studs need to be changed is April or May 15th, I think, or you get ticketed if caught. We were still having snow storms at the end of April. Surprisingly, this past summer was more sunshine then rain 🙂. Sept 15th is when you can start putting them on.
