i'm planning a big ski trip for the week of new years
Any place is bad news over the holidays. You'd do better taking a shorter trip on a non-holiday weekend. It'd be cheaper and you'd get more skiing in!
I can go anywhere, but figured i might try vail or beaver creek or aspen
IMHO Aspen is an asshole magnet. I've only been there once, but the people were so obnoxious I won't go back.
Some examples:
- Blatant racism: A black girl in our group was told by another skier that "her kind weren't welcome on this mountain."
- Obnoxious rich people cutting in lift lines. Honest to god, they just jumped right in. Some people raised a fuss, and the guy turns arounds and says something like "So what are you going to do about it". Nothing, cuz some of his "friends" looked more like body guards.
- Obnoxious lift attendents. I blew the toe binding off a ski near the top on my second run down. Lift attendent wouldn't let me ride the gondola down and made some snide comment about sh|tty equipment.
And on top of that, they had lousy snow.
Sorry, but aspen makes my blood boil.
i'm worried about snow though. can you tell from from past experience at all if there's usually a decent base by late dec / january 1st?
It varies alot yeat to year. To be safe that early in the season, I'd get a combo pass to Vail resorts (Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Keystone). Odds are there will be good snow somewhere, and you have a choice of mountains.
any suggestions on hotels near vail? (is vail around the holidays a bad idea?)
would you happen to know if lake tahoe or what not would be a better early season alternative? just looking for who'se likely to have the best conditions
I think Utah may get better early season snow.
