Aspen got about 3 inches, :D Ski season is just around the corner. I hope we (colorado) get a crap load of snow this year not only for some great skiing but for also for drought relief.

That sounds nice. It was in the 80s and humid as hell here in Atlanta yesterday. I'm really ready for fall.

I am SO ready for fall! I'm in AZ, and we have 100's forecasted for weeks. I definitely live in the wrong state. I miss chilly October nights, raking leaves in a sweatshirt, snowfall in November. Instead, our normal temps show a high of 85 or more until Oct 27th (via weather.com). :| If we're lucky, Christmas day will be below 70. People here love it, which makes me even more mad. They're so happy they can wear shorts on Thanksgiving and Christmas. To me, it's not the holidays if it's not cold. It's as if everyone agreed to do Christmas in August. Thanks for letting me vent, as I prepare for our Indian Summer.

hey Citrix, question for you

i'm planning a big ski trip for the week of new years

I can go anywhere, but figured i might try vail or beaver creek or aspen

i'm worried about snow though. can you tell from from past experience at all if there's usually a decent base by late dec / january 1st?

any suggestions on hotels near vail? (is vail around the holidays a bad idea?)

would you happen to know if lake tahoe or what not would be a better early season alternative? just looking for who'se likely to have the best conditions

thanks for any info!

Where are you originally from, I hear ya about the snowfall, changing seasons as opposed to 70 and above all year around. I am currently living in Atlanta and ready to move back North.

Any place is bad news over the holidays. You'd do better taking a shorter trip on a non-holiday weekend. It'd be cheaper and you'd get more skiing in!

IMHO Aspen is an asshole magnet. I've only been there once, but the people were so obnoxious I won't go back.
Some examples:
- Blatant racism: A black girl in our group was told by another skier that "her kind weren't welcome on this mountain."
- Obnoxious rich people cutting in lift lines. Honest to god, they just jumped right in. Some people raised a fuss, and the guy turns arounds and says something like "So what are you going to do about it". Nothing, cuz some of his "friends" looked more like body guards.
- Obnoxious lift attendents. I blew the toe binding off a ski near the top on my second run down. Lift attendent wouldn't let me ride the gondola down and made some snide comment about sh|tty equipment.

And on top of that, they had lousy snow.

Sorry, but aspen makes my blood boil.

i'm worried about snow though. can you tell from from past experience at all if there's usually a decent base by late dec / january 1st?

It varies alot yeat to year. To be safe that early in the season, I'd get a combo pass to Vail resorts (Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Keystone). Odds are there will be good snow somewhere, and you have a choice of mountains.

I think Utah may get better early season snow.

thanks for any info!

what he said ^^

I hate Aspen. because I also think the people who ski there are rich snobs who need their ass kicked because they are really rude. PLUS its $$$$ to ski there.

I normally ski at Keystone, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, and sometimes i hit Winter Park. the people are much friendlier and much less money and in my opinion better slopes.

I dont know anything about Tahoe, but the ski resorts here in colorado are packed for new years so prepare yourself for that. The past few years late Dec is when the skiing gets good here. There have been enough snow storms to move in to get a pretty decient base. never ski in Nov, its mosty man-made crap.
