Anyone know of some unicenter compatible snmp agents for Linux and Solaris that are different than the unicenter clients? :p

Any and all suggestions welcome. The cheaper ($) the better.

well, other than generic SNMP you really should use their agents. Want all the goodies? Pay for the agents. That's what they are for.

And get a real management platform while you're at it.

Not my choice. I'm going to give myself a headache if I try to hold back on my "wonderful" feelings towards CA, so I'll keep this short.

I don't know what kind of capabilities we need, so this thread is kind of a waste at the moment. Maybe tomorrow I'll find out what we're looking for. I hate stupid projects like this.

EDIT: What management platform would you suggest? Just curious. :)

what management platform?

depends entirely on what you are trying to accomplish.

The thing with those agents is SNMP has its basics. Good platforms (bmc, unicenter, tivoli, openview) can read all the vendor specific stuff. But to really get all the goodies you have to use their agents.

Think about it.

I understand all that. I don't know why I've been tasked with this, or why we're doing this at all. Just figured I'd make a post to see what people thought. Maybe I'll get some requirements tomorrow so I can figure out what I'm looking for. :p

management platforms are tricky.

1) pick up a tool
2) try to do the job

or

1) figure out what the job is
2) pick the right tool

your choice.

square peg round hole sorta thing? catch my drift?

Makes sense. We've got something in place already. We've been adding systems, and I'm not sure how many of our older systems are monitored.

the difficulty in management platforms isn't "monitoring" them.

what is it you want to monitor? The thing is all the individual element managers do a great job at what they do - rolling it all up into something intelligible is something different.
