Empty out the insides and put a small, adopted puppy inside.
That way, you give it a nice glass playpen and can watch him as if he's on tv.😀

It's a good time and when your tax refund arrives, prices should drop even more.

Any idea how much you'll be able to spend?

The sooner you get rid of it, the better. Distortion, discoloration, convergence, geometry, enormous bulk and weight, power hungry, plus your dad may have not taken the best of care of this beast.

If you've the cash, get a 1080p 46" lcd or 50" dlp or plasma. These are prolly the best values now under $2000.

Depending on his budget I think a 37" LCD 720p for $699 offers more bang for your buck.

True, but I believe J&R Computers had a deal for $899 or so for a 37" 1080 LCD, so this is prolly where the price structures are now.
BB may have a 47" 1080p LCD for $1999- when you look at it, it REALLY does blanket your field of vision, so it may worth looking into if someone wants a larger display.

50" DLP would be perfect. If the Sony SXRD drops in price, that will be THE TV to get.

If you get a new CRT, make sure you order the AVIA DVD disc - it's got some basic calibration tests for your tv. Most TVs have the contrast too high by default, and the higher it's set the shorter its lifespan. I've found out that on my new HDTV CRT, I get a perfectly visible picture at 27 (on a setting scale of 1-100), and I don't feel it as being blindingly bright when watching it in the dark. You don't have to worry so much about turning the contrast too high on non-CRTs, but the disc also helps you set the best color, hue, and sharpness levels.
