Snes classic incoming.

Honestly, the way they handled the NES Classic has killed any enthusiasm I have for an SNES Classic....

Their BS line "we had no idea the NES Classic would be in such demand" was either a straight up lie, or incompetence.

They announced the console 4 months before it launched and the announcement went mainstream, and people outside of the gaming community were talking about buying them.

Color me skeptical. The NES classic seemed like a stop gap between the Wii U and the Switch to keep them afloat in the mean time. Even if they were interested in making a SNES classic, that's still no reason to stop making the NES classic if it's so hot it can't stay in stock.

I'd be more excited about a SNES one than the NES one....but then common sense kicks in and I realize, that's just stupid. If I buy them, it would be to resell. 😀

Awesome! Let's get excited for a remake system coming out months down the line that will play games we can play RIGHT NOW if we really cared to do so!

It's enough that this generation sucks shit and is basically just "HD Remake" gen, but now we're even getting remakes of consoles?

Whatever. I would enjoy owning an official collectible mini SNES with a pretty authentic replica controller that's brand new/unused.

I would too, but i have a strong feeling i'll never own one just like the NES classic. 🙁

And Nintendo knows this, which is why they are doing this. I mean think about how many times they have re-released Super Mario Brothers and people eat it up. They aren't stupid when it comes to making money and are probably the smartest about doing that of the big three. It's just nothing I plan on being a part of nor can I get excited for it.

I gotta disagree with you there! 🙂

They just canceled the NES Classic Edition and never came anywhere close to satisfying demand. Apparently, Nintendo only wanted the NES Classic to get them through the holiday season after production of Wii U stopped.

The Wii U was an example of Nintendo's incompetence.

You can disagree all you want but you are wrong - Nintendo prints money.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is also a limited edition run. A way to gauge enthusiasm for old games that could be dropped on to the Google Play store for $19.99. Or something.

Nintendo should just license games for a crapload of money and stop their own productions.

We never got a proper Metroid or Mario Galaxy and the original Zelda game didnt come out until they had a new console.
And Mario Kart 8 isnt enough to keep the Wii U afloat.

I feel like someone could 3D print these with pi's in them and make a killing until N shut them down. I mean, we've all been playing NES/SNES games on our PC's since the early 90's. All they are doing is emulating, and they only put 30 games on it. They know this conflicts with their VC moves and ability to milk you for each iteration on each console. Especially since that is practically ALL they are releasing these days. Honestly, it is very suprising they even released the NES Classic now that I think about it. It is completely counter productive to the VC. As successful as it was, they could have upped the price by $20 and still not been able to keep up. There is a very clear want for these things and it is clear Nintendo would rather sell the games for $9.99 a pop.

Enjoy the 6 inch cable. 😛
Not sure you understand.

That's Ichinisan playing in the video.

They never charged $9.99 for NES or SNES games on the Virtual Console. Standard pricing was $5 for NES, $8 for SNES, and $10 for N64 with few exceptions (SMB2-J, Sin & Punishment, etc).

I have an NES Top loader from the mid 90's but I still wish I could have nabbed a Classic Edition before Nintendo stopped making them. 🙁 Perhaps I would not feel as bad if my NES had a composite out instead of RF Unit only. I could just kick myself for not getting it retrofitted by Nintendo but I had no idea at the time they would upgrade it if you complained about the picture quality.

Maybe I'm mixing up the different consoles, I know I saw a lot of $10 games. I've never bought one. It's insanity.

You can mail it out to modders for modification or just buy a front loader with composite out and snip the CEC chip ground pin to make the front loader reliable. Lots of options. The best thing about the top loader is the controller for sure. I was turned off by the NES Classic mostly because I find the rectangle controller, while classic, uncomfortable. I personally use a front loader with a collection of my old games, and a 100-in-1 cart for the rare games I'm missing...

But if they make an SNES classic, zmog.

Disabling the CIC helps, but lots of front loaders have a connector that's so badly worn you need to do quite a bit more to refurbish them.

Blinking Light Win works.

Unfortunately, disabling the CIC only marginally improves reliability. The same reliability issues that affect the CIC connection affect the rest of the connections in the front loader. In other words, when it flashed a blank or corrupted screen, the only difference will be that it doesn't flash/reset. It will remain blank or corrupted. With 72 pins that could go wrong, those four really don't count for all that much.

Even with a normal brand new aftermarket connector, reliability will never come close to the top loader. What we need for that is a product called Blinking Light Win. It's a different kind of replacement connector that has a built-in CIC clone (eliminates the CIC connection from the cartridge) and loads without pushing down, like a sideways top loader. It actually includes a new tray that prevents you from pushing down.

The only drawback is that it feels super tight, like it has a death-grip on your cartridges. It was designed to be comparable to the top loader's tightness but there isn't enough room to grab the cartridge and it's a real pain to remove them with the tips of your fingers. I noticed that it had all 72 pins including the auxiliary and CIC pins that even the top loader leaves out (if you look inside you see that it's missing many pins in the middle). I removed them to reduce the friction and then removed even more unused pins, like CPU CLK. All in all, it was a 22%+ reduction in pins. The death grip is significantly reduced. Though it may still feel WAY too tight, feeling it side-by-side with an unmodified Blinking Light Win reveals that it's a night-and-day difference.

Nintendo made the perfect machine in the Famicom. They sure f$%^cked it up with the US release though. All kinds of technical problems caused born solely out of a need to trick retailers into thinking it wasn't a gaming machine.

Well, if you call super-short built-in controllers, unshielded FCC-non-compliant RF output, and no composite output "perfect." 😉

The Fami is great but not all the changes in the NES were for the worse. Also, their trick worked and revitalized the US gaming industry, so I'm not sorry they did it. 🙂
