Why have G8 when you have GTO already? Is this a GTO replacement?

B/C the GTO platform is old as dirt? IIRC, we first saw the GTO's platform back in 1996 when the 1997 Cadillac Catera was introduced.

On top of that, this looks 10x better and seats 5.

You remember incorrectly. YRI

ORLY?
The Pontiac GTO was relaunched in the United States in late 2003, based on the Holden Monaro's V platform. The Monaro is a 2 door coupe variant of the Australian developed VT/VX Holden Commodore. The Commodore was in turn developed by enlarging the European designed 1994 Opel Omega B, which was marketed in its original form in the U.S. from 1997 to 2001 as the Cadillac Catera.

That's right, it wasn't a Cadillac it was first seen in. It was an Opel.

First time "WE" as in the US saw it was in 1996 as the '97 Catera. I already said that or did I stutter? :D

Only if you were saying it as you were typing it.

Wow, looks way better than I thought it would. The wheels are pretty nice, and even the interior doesn't look crazy. The hood is a bit much, but I like the attempt. That is the best looking recent American car (excluding the Corvette) in a while.

Man...looking at those pics, I nearly spooged all over my LCD. They can't come out with this thing quickly enough in my opinion. I was really scared they were going to ruin this thing coming across the pond.

Small Block V8 with 300+ Horsepower? Check
Rear Wheel Drive? Check
Six Speed Manual? Check
Nice Styling? Check
4 doors so I can talk my SO into it? Check

I may not be able to get up from my desk all day.

there is nothing small about a 6l engine

It is considered a small block engine...and it certainly is a lot smaller than any DOHC 8 cyl engines

I like the new emblem...but I don't see that showing up on the production car...we'll see. I think the lack of the red in the emblem makes it look a LOT better.

Um...what? Why have a 5 door performance sedan when you already have a 2 door performance coupe? Does anyone really need to answer this question?

As someone who doesn't live in USA and is used to Euro/Japanese cars, this is HOT. It's just straight good looking - nothing of the crap BMW feeds us with the recent generation, for example. Just good looking, straightforward, aggressive yet classy. I LIKE!

I'm just waiting for GM to screw this up some how like putting the steering assembly from the current Malibu in there.

That thing is just so sexy from the front 3/4 view: VERY aggressive stance (esp. for an "American" car), air intakes on the hood are just garish enough to look dangerous (but not tacky like those ram-air F-bodies), and the headlight lenses and grille are perfect. I'm not crazy about the rear end, but that's for the people left in your dust!

I actually like the rear-end the most... rear 3/4 view FTW! I don't live the air intakes...but then I rarely like them on any car...but if this car even lives up to half of what it seems to be on paper...I'll happily overlook the hood scoops.

According to the person at the G8 display, the hood scoops are functional, but I'd take that with a grain of salt because she didn't know any specifics on burnout performance.

EDIT: This was at the Chicago Auto Show.

Thanks for the links! If this G8 GT is really $27,000 and the auto mags say it kicks major butt, then I may consider one to replace my current car when the lease is up in one year.

You're looking at the v6 for around $27k. The v8 will probably be around $33-35k.
