snap on SMD chip connectors

Looking for spring loaded solderless chip connector hardware like what you see on those solderless mod chips that piggyback onto the top of already soldered in place SMD chips.

Particularly for a 44 pin SO M27C320 style EPROM/mask ROM.

What I need to do is really pretty simply really, just need to piggy back another 44 pin SO onto an existing one already soldered in place. Both of their pin 12 (chip select/enable) will be lifted and connected to a DPDT switch that allows me to effectively switch the entire 4 MB ROM with the flick of a switch by alternately connecting one CS/CE to the original trace and the other held high.

Looking for alternatives to tedius and potentially destructive SMD soldering by hand, and I remember seeing those solderless game console mod chip contacts that press down onto the top of the chips, and I can't seem to locate those type of connectors.

interesting -

some quick googling says you're looking for something like a custom 'tophat flash' - essentially 2 SOP44 socket bottoms sandwiching a pcb.

looking for something ready-made?

if you're handy with a soldering iron you could get 2 sockets, bend the pins downward, solder them together except the chip select lines ( i believe SOxx have the largest pitch so it wouldn't be very hard ) and cut out any plastic in case they're one way only... however i can't seem to find any SOP44 sockets for sale.

I'm fully capable of soldering SMD, including removing and replacing the mask rom entirely. The goal here is to minimize destruction and blasphemous molestation of the original device as much as possible.

I might have to look into making my own with two sockets. I've not used SMD style sockets before. AFAIK most are meant to have fully leaded chips with the legs curled under, not sure how much contact it can have being pressed onto the top of a chip already soldered in place.

SO44 sockets I've seen seem kind of tall and fat with slide/push locks though, not sure if one would work inverted simply pressed against a chip on a PCB. The clip on connector I'm thinking of is much lower profile and made just for that purpose; clipping onto the top of the chip, contacting the pins at the top corners right where they exit the chip, and thin enough to not contact any SMD resistors etc around the chip.

I didn't know if there was a common name or type of connector for that, but it's looking like they are a custom fab thing for solder free console mod chip harnesses and not industry standard.

May have a bigger problem anyhow, appears the 27C320 SOIC44 style EPROMs haven't been made in quite some time, might be stuck soldering 42 wires and using a 27C322 DIP anyway.
