My computer speakers in the last few hours have been snapping and popping like frying bacon. Rebooting gets rid of it but once I start loading apps it kicks up. Here's the kicker: I muted the speakers in Windows, so there is no audio, but it's still popping. I suspect that means a hardware issue, no?

it's a Sound Blaster Audigy, rather old, but better than the newer generation of cards if you ask me.

Based on that, not sure why you would consider it better.

But I still use an old Auzentech Prelude X-Fi 7.1, it doesn't snap and pop.

It may have finally died possibly.

Get some contact-cleaner spray from a "Hi-Fi store" (or the internet), and try cleaning the contacts.
