Snake on my lawn

Yesterday, my wife almost stepped on a snake that slithered onto our lawn. She freaked out. I took a look at it and it looked like a little gopher snake. I think gophers aren't poisonous, but it could be a little rattler. I didn't know if rattlers under one year old have a rattle yet but this one didn't have one. I do know that young rattlers can be more deadly than older ones. So I pushed it into the sewer to be safe. Well, that was after I played with it a little. I grabbed it by the tail like they do on TV. Kept its head away from me, but it kept on trying to bring its head up to bite me so I had to drop it.

I hope it doesn't end up crawling out of someone's toilet.

Take a pic of it and we will tell you what kind of snake it is, or let it bite you and the doctor will do the same.

"Look at its shaaap teeth!!"

Seriously though, most rattlesnakes have a diamond pattern on their backs or someother geometric shape. I am pretty sure gopher snakes are just plain or random. And while they may not be poisonous, their bites still hurt like a bitch. Where do you live? Might be able to narrow down the possibilities that way.

Stockton, CA. The snake had patterns, but gopher and rattles have similar patterns. This one was small so I didn't want to take any chances. Had it been bigger, it would have been easier to tell since large rattle snakes have rattles.

Hahaha, hilarious mental image of an ATOT version of Steve the Crocodile Hunter!

You know, it was an adrenalin rush, but for some reason, this snake didn't do what the ones on TV did. It turned its head back and came up towards the tail where I was holding it. I had to let it drop when the head got half way up.

They're freakn scary and they bite!

You're afraid of a 16" long animal that weighs 4 ounces and has teeth smaller than thumbtacks?

I've been bitten by a garter snake before. It hurts less than the scratches I get when I play with my cat.

Even after it bit me, I didn't kill it. It only bit me me because I scared the sh!t out of it. What would you do if an animal 500 times your size picked you up?

1. I'm afraid of needles, snake bites are worst than needles.
2. Could be a chance that this thing was poisonous. Can't let it live because it could bite someone in the neighborhood. Its kinda like when we tore down Saddam's regime because we think he might have WMD.

When I was younger....my cat was sitting staring at something in the garden, went out there to find a snake....wasn't that big, I assumed it was a grass snake and picked it up and put it safely away into the undergrowth.....

Later I was reading a nature book.....was no grass snake....was a young adder....yipes....glad it didn't bit me.

I highly doubt that it was a rattlesnake. Even the young ones have a rattle or two. Next time take a look at it's head. The shape of the head will help you determine if it is a pit viper or not.

So, basically you killed it cause you're a pussy?

Ummm he said he put it in the sewer, not that he killed it. It may have survived.

The shape of the head? Did you know that when threatened, a gopher snake can flatten its head so it looks more like a rattle snake? It can also vibrate its tail to simulate a rattler too so its pretty hard to tell. I still think playing it safe would be the best route.

soon to be continued... Part II: Snake in my sh!tter.

If you wife freaked out when she stepped on it, just think what she will do when she sees swimming around in the crapper.
