SN25P and X1800XT Problems

Ok, so I just got a X1800XT for my system.

Shuttle SN25P (latest bios)
AMD X2 3800+ (stock speeds)
2GB of G.SKILL Extreme Series RAM (stock speeds)
ATi X1800XT (latest drivers/stock speeds)
2 x 36 GB Western Digital Raptors
Pioneer DVD+/-RW
Windows XP Pro SP2

Ok, so here's the deal. First off, when i boot the computer, my POST screen still has the Shuttle XPC but its crazy colors and not just white. Second, in games, i freeze and then crash after 10-60 minutes. In any Steam related game (CS:S or HL2 Lost Coast) the system stops responding and then after a couple of seconds, will restart. In RF Online, the system would BSOD.

Now, my old videocard was a X800XL. I would get the nice POST screen with it, but the games would also crash with that as well. So it led me to believe it was not a videocard problem. My first inclination was to test the RAM, so I ran MEMTEST on each stick seperate and together. Always passed. Also tried SuperPI and had no problems. Next I thought it was the hard drive, so I swapped them and still had problems. Maybe the CPU? Well, temps are in the low 30's so I should be fine there. Maybe its my BRAND NEW VIDEOCARD?!?! NOOOOOOOOOO! Sooooo, since I already sold my X800XL to a friend for next to nothin', I grabbed a 6600U that I had kinda lying around. Popped that in and I get the normal POST screen and I haven't seen any in game crashes.

So, does anyone know why my X1800XT would be screwing up? It's brand new, and I've seen many people with setups very similar if not exactly the same. They have no problems with the same power restriction that I have. What's the deal? 🙁

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No ideas?

Well, I played that with that 6600U and had it in game for about 6-7 hours with no problems. Gonna let a friend borrow my X1800XT and see if they can get it to crash.

Maybe the PSU of that shuttle is not rated as high as it needs to be, I am not certain, but I believe the requirements of a X1800XT are a 450W Power Supply.

Sounds like a good explanation. The Shuttle PSU is rated at 350W, not sure of the power consumption of the x1800xt but it could definately cause crashes if its not getting enough juice.

The power supply has plenty of juice...look at the forums on Sudhian and you'll see lots of people with these cards running in their boxes.

Actually after owning an X1800XT and a 1900XT I can say these new ATi cards do require alot of juice.
Visionteks website reccomends a 480W PSU

Make sure the hard drive and the video card are on a differerent line coming from the PSU. Also try disconnecting your optical drive (although i doubt it takes much juice) and see if you can isolate if its a power issue.

That's a good troubleshooting move, though it obviously requires some patience. If it works fine there I'd DEFINITELY look at the power supply. Sometimes with the SFFs you have make a few compromises.
