SMTP only works while logged into webmail

Hello all
I have a little strange of a problem and I am hoping to get some opinions from others on this.

A company I do some IT work for has their own domain name which they use their mail server for POP3 incoming server, however they use pacbell.net account to send emails out through SMTP server, they all use the same account to send the emails out.
For last few days the SMTP server would not work, each time we tried to log in it would pop up and ask for password, however I have discovered that if any of the computers on the LAN are connected to the att.yahoo.com webmail using the same account as it is being used for SMTP all users can send their email.
Once you log out of the webmail, the SMTP error comes back, keeps on saying that you can not verify the password.
Entire office is using Outlook 2007 as a mail client.

Any ideas?
Thank you
Mark

Do they require smtp auth? Are they allowing you to use them as a relay? Some isp will not let you use teir smtp servers if you arent on their network addresses

A quick workaround could be to use gmail's smtp server. It's a trick I use when people are stuck on their ISP provided email addresses. You need to set up a gmail account (you can use just one) and set up a "send as" address.
