SMTP issues?

So its strange, I can't seem to connect to any of my SMTP servers. i'm staying in a stanford dorm for a summer conference which has a router serving the building. any ideas what could be wrong? the mail servers i use require authentication, which I have inputted correctly and works from everywhere else. its just in this building it gives an error the second i try connecting.

While there might be ways around it, they would pretty clearly be a violation of policy, at least in spirit. I'd talk to the tech people - they most likely have a mail relay you can use for outgoing mail.

Where is your primary SMTP server located? For example, I have Sprint DSL and they provide me with an SMTP server. However, if I take my computer to another network and receive an IP address from another ISP, my Sprint SMTP server will not work. I believe they block all IP addresses that are not served by Sprint DHCP servers. I'd call the IT department at the University and ask them if they have a server you could use for the summer.
