I broke out an old Tyan Tiger 100 Dual Slot-1 board today. I had a couple of P2-300's so I used those and a bunch of memory that all seemed to work fine. The board recognizes both cpu's, Windows 2000 recognized both cpu's. Also, I have the very latest bios for thos board (V2.00.05)

I installed Windows 2000 and opened the task manager is showing about 30% load on one cpu and 25-30% on the other, when idle! I checked the process list and their isn't anything that is utilizing the cpu's. So what could it be?

I'm thinking it could be ACPI related, but I don't know what I can really do besides turning it off, but then I don't think Windows will boot, right? I have the "ACPI Aware OS" option enabled in the bios, and Windows installed the ACPI kernel accordingly.

Any idea's?

Thanks.

Thinking that the dual-cpu's might be causing a problem, I pulled processor #2 and booted Windows 2k without any problem, but it's still using 50% idle :(

I thought I remember a similar problem to this in the past, but I can't recall the details...

Are all your drivers up to date? I seem to recall there was an issue a long time ago with Abit BP6 dual-CPU boards where the driver for the built-in highpoint UDMA66 controller would cause 50% CPU usage even when idle, maybe you have a similar problem (I'm not too familiar with the Tyan board, though).

Yeah, all my drivers are up to date.

I pulled the 2nd cpu and switch ACPI off in the BIOS an in Win2k... works now. pfffft
